RICHMOND, Ky. -
BGSU HEAD COACH CURT MILLER
"I'm really proud of the kids. This program has not won two games in a row in a tournament or classic situation in a long, long time. The positive is that we found a way to win, and that's a good sign. But, we certainly didn't play our best basketball."
"Stefanie Wenzel carried us, and hit big baskets tonight. She stepped up, when a lot of our kids were playing tentative offensively. We passed up some shots that our kids are certainly capable of making, but to their credit, they kept trying to find Stefanie. She was the hot person, and she put some nails in the coffin. When it was still a game, she stepped up and made some big shots."
"Casey McDowell gave us a spark in the first half, when we couldn't get a lot going. She made a jumper and two threes, and I was really confident with her. Casey is always frustrated when she turns the ball over, and as well as she played in the first half, she was really frustrated with her turnovers. But, she's just a calming influence out there. She's a veteran, she's a really good leader, she executes the offense and she understands what we're trying to do defensively. I feel really confident when Casey's on the floor, and she's such an integral part of our bench play. Her nine points were big off the bench."
"We were dragging a little bit tonight. That was a really emotional, hard-fought win last night against Eastern Kentucky. We played our guts out in that game, and we were dragging (vs. Morehead State). We were a step slow, both offensively and defensively. Some of our shots were shorts, and some of that can be attributed to fatigue. So, I wanted to play some more kids, and we got everyone in. But, I wish I could play them all more minutes, because they're certainly great people to work with."
"We told our kids that nothing comes easy on the road. Even though it's a neutral game, Morehead plays here every year, as part of this conference. So, we told them that they need to earn the victory; nothing will be handed to you. We kept on telling them to push and try to get that one final run, to bury them and put it out of reach. But, we just couldn't get that one big run in the second half to push (the lead) to 18 or 20. To their credit, they kept fighting and made us work. I didn't feel comfortable that we were going to win until about a minute or two remained."
"The IUPUI game (on Dec. 22) was about as low as I've been in my three years at BG. But, I love the character of this team. They stepped up and won two games, and now we've guaranteed ourselves a winning record in non-conference play, with a game to go."
