March 1, 2003
With the Falcons 51-48 victory over Miami, BGSU Coach Dan Dakich became the second fastest men's basketball coach in school history to reach the century mark in victories. Harold Anderson was the fastest BGSU coach to win 100 games in his career (135 games). John Weinert accomplished the feat in 188 games, Paul Landis in 197 games and Jim Larranaga in 199 games. Coach Dakich is 100-71.
It also marked the eighth straight victory over the RedHawks in the regular season since the 1998-99 season and the seventh straight triumph against Miami in Anderson Arena. The game also marked the ninth win by Dakich over Miami, which is tied with Buffalo as the most frequent opponent to fall to a Dakich-coached BGSU squad.
The 48 points allowed by BGSU ties their best defensive effort of the season (48 vs. Urbana) and is the fewest points allowed in a MAC game for the Falcons since they defeated Akron, 76-46, last year. It also marked the fewest points allowed in a BGSU win over Miami since the Falcons won a 53-47 decision in BG in 1992.
Junior Kevin Netter had a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds marking the sixth time he has scored 20 points or more this season and the first since the Falcons last victory, January 28 at Ohio. Netter's 10 of 14 effort from the free throw line was the fourth time this season he has made 10 free throws or more in a game.
Freshman Cole Magner tied his career-high with eight points in a season-high 33 minutes. He also had eight rebounds, including three on the offensive end, four assists and six steals. All are career-bests for the quarterback/wide receiver/point guard from Palmer, Alaska. Magner nailed two free throws with 1.5 seconds left, after a steal and a subsequent intentional foul by the RedHawks to seal the win.
With its defensive stop in the closing seconds, BGSU won its third game this year and 10th in the last two seasons with defense when it was leading by one or two points in the final minute of a game.
Senior Cory Ryan played 40 minutes for the first time in his career.
The Falcons improved to 7-3 this season when it held an opponent to 30% or less from three-point range. Miami hit just 4 of 24 from long distance (16.7).
