Falcons Set For Seven Games In Virginia

The Bowling Green State University softball team continues spring-trip action with this weekend's Cavalier Classic, hosted by the University of Virginia ... prior to the tournament, the Falcons (6-4-1) of fifth-year head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw will put a five-game unbeaten streak on the line with a Thursday (March 13) single game vs. UVa ... that contest begins at 3:30 p.m. at The Park ... then, the Cavalier Classic will run from Friday through Sunday (March 14-16) ... the Falcons will play doubleheaders against each of the other three teams in the event ... BGSU will play a Friday (March 14) twinbill vs. Seton Hall, a Saturday (March 15) double-dip against Stony Brook and a Sunday (March 16) DH vs. host UVa ... starting times are noon on Friday and Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. Sunday ... then, BGSU returns home to prepare for the Mid-American Conference slate, scheduled to begin with a doubleheader at Western Michigan on Saturday, March 22 ... the Falcons' upcoming schedule follows:

BGSU is coming off a 2002 season that saw the team go 22-25-1 overall and 11-13 in MAC play ... the Falcons missed qualifying for the MAC Tournament for the first time since 1997 ... Ross-Shaw returns 10 letterwinners, including five starters, from that squad.
HEAD COACH LEIGH ROSS-SHAW
Leigh Ross-Shaw is in her fifth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 117-92-2 (.559) ... Ross-Shaw, the 2001 MAC Coach of the Year, has a league mark of 58-36 (.617) ... she guided the Brown and Orange to a MAC East Division title in 2001 and a co-championship in 2000 ... Ross-Shaw has the best winning percentage in conference games of any coach in BGSU softball history, and was the fastest coach in BG annals to get to 100 overall wins as well as 50 MAC victories ... Ross-Shaw is just 19 wins shy of the school's all-time leader, Jacquie Joseph (136-123 from 1989-93) ... Ross-Shaw's total of 58 MAC wins places her third behind Joseph (78-71) and Rachel Miller-Reif (71-84 from 1994-98).
ASSISTANT COACHES
Tami Summers is in her second season as a BGSU assistant ... Summers, a native of Tallmadge, Ohio, was a four-year letterwinner for the Rockets from 1984-87 ... she set school career records for appearances, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and winning pct. (.703) ... Summers returned to her alma mater, serving as head coach in 1998 and 1999 ... Steve Babinski is in his first campaign as an assistant to Ross-Shaw ... Babinski, a graduate of Grace (Ind.) College, was a standout baseball player there ... he has spent the past several years coaching at the Bowling Green Christian Academy.
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons have begun the spring trip by going 4-1-1, and BGSU carries a five-game unbeaten streak into Thursday's game at Virginia ... the Brown and Orange began the trip with a 5-2 loss at Louisville Friday (March 7), but then won UL's Red and Black Classic by going 3-0 with three shutout wins over the next two days ... BGSU was undefeated in the tourney, with a 2-0 win over Illinois State and 3-0 victories against both Ohio and UL ... then, the Falcons posted an 8-6 win at Morehead State in the first game of Tuesday's (March 11) doubleheader ... with the teams deadlocked at 5-5, the second game was called after five innings due to darkness.
THE OPPONENTS
Virginia has an overall record of 10-11 overall, and the Cavaliers have captured four of the last five games ... UVa. won the 49er Invitational in Charlotte, N.C., last weekend, beating Akron in the championship game ... Thursday's game vs. BGSU will mark the Cavaliers' home opener ... Sara Larquier leads the team in batting (.377), homeruns (six) and RBI (18), while both Heather Field and Ruby Rojas are hitting .364 with three homers ... Erin Horn leads the pitchers with a 5-5 record and a 2.64 earned-run average ... last year, UVa went 45-22 overall and 1-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference ... head coach Cheryl Sprangel has a record of 207-142 in her sixth season in Charlottesville ... Seton Hall is 2-2 on the season, and the Pirates have been idle since playing in South Florida's tournament on Feb. 21-23 ... SHU saw their scheduled tourney at Virginia Beach, plus doubleheaders at Fairleigh Dickinson and Army, postponed due to weather and field conditions ... Meg Berry is hitting .500 (3-for-6), while McKenzie Richards is batting .467 (7-for-15) in the early going ... Christina Shanko is 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA, having allowed only one (unearned) run in nearly 17 innings ... a season ago, the Pirates went 29-17 overall and 11-9 in the Big East Conference ... Stony Brook takes a 3-5 record into the Cavalier Classic ... the Seawolves will be looking to break a three-game losing streak after playing in the Charleston Southern Invitational last weekend ... individually, Jane Stein is hitting .429 with four homers, while Kristen Brust has a .423 average and three dingers ... Jessica Paparella is 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA, while Angela Andrews, who has pitched a team-high 31 2/3 innings, is 1-3 with a 3.41 ERA ... the Seawolves, a member of the America East Conference, were 25-27 a year ago ... head coach Megan Bryant has a record of 48-52 in her third season with the Seawolves ... the school's athletics web site is www.goseawolves.com.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail the all-time series with Virginia by a 5-2 margin ... the teams met once last season and three times in 2001, with the Cavaliers winning all four meetings ... the Falcons' last win over UVa was a 3-0 decision in 2000 ... BGSU has a 1-0 record against Seton Hall, with the lone previous meeting coming in 1984 ... BGSU and Stony Brook have not previously met in softball.
GOOSE EGGS
In the season's opening weekend (Feb. 14-16), Falcon pitchers put together a string of 19 consecutive shutout innings at the New Mexico State Tournament ... then, BGSU pitching had a shutout streak lasting 25 2/3 innings ... after blanking Louisville for the last three-plus innings of Friday's loss, Falcon hurlers then had shutouts vs. Illinois State (eight innings), Ohio and UL ... BG allowed a first-inning run in the first Morehead State game to break the streak ... with five shutouts this year, the Falcons already have quintupled the total for all of last season.
UNDEFEATED AND UNSCORED UPON
The Falcons went 3-0 and did not allow an earned run in winning last weekend's Red and Black Classic in Louisville, Ky. ... it marked the first time BGSU had gone undefeated in a tourney since the Falcons won the Mount Union Tournament in 1982 with a 4-0 record ... the Falcons' three consecutive shutouts last weekend tied a school record (last time was April 6-7, 1993) ... after going 48 games without a shutout, BG then had five shutouts in an eight-game span.
VOSHELL'S STREAK AT EIGHT GAMES
Senior shortstop Libby Voshell takes a BG season-high eight-game hitting streak into Thursday's game ... Voshell is hitting an even .500 (13-of-26) in that time, with four multiple-hit games ... on the year, Voshell is batting .424, just behind freshman Gina Rango's team-leading .429 BA.
