BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team continued a strong spring season with a tournament title last weekend, as the Falcons captured the 14th Annual Spring Fling Tournament at Anderson Arena Saturday (April 12). BGSU won the eight-team tournament, marking the Falcons' second title in three tourneys this spring.
On Saturday, the Falcons earned wins over some strong Mid-American Conference competition. The Falcons won the Orange pool with a 5-1 record, as each of the four teams -- BGSU, IPFW, and MAC rivals Miami and Toledo -- played two games against the other three squads.
In the Brown division, another MAC squad, Ohio, finished first, followed by Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Findlay. The results meant that the Falcons would face the Bobcats in cross-over play.
In that cross-over competition, BGSU handed OU a quick 2-0 loss to post the best record of the overall tournament. Rising senior Susie Norris led the Falcons on the day, as the outside hitter posted a team-high 4.75 kills per game in the tournament. All five starting attackers had at least 2.0 kpg on the day for the Falcons.
Melissa Mohr continued her solid spring, hitting .333 while adding 1.38 blocks per game at the Spring Fling. Middle blocker Taylor Twite also had a solid day, and leads the Falcons in hitting efficiency with a .365 average this spring.
Rising sophomore Emily Manser, Twite and Norris each are averaging over 2.50 kills per game in the spring season.
In three spring tournaments, including tourneys at EMU and Kent State as well as the Spring Fling, the Falcons compiled an overall record of 21-6 in games. As mentioned, the Falcons of head coach Denise Van De Walle claimed the top spot in two of the three tournaments. BGSU concludes spring training this week.
