DeKalb, Ill. - Bowling Green dropped a pair of one-run games on Sunday against Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill, 2-1 and 9-8. NIU won three of four games in the series for the weekend.
* In game one, BGSU's Tyler Saneholtz held the Huskies scoreless through the first five innings of the seven inning contest. He allowed only one runner to reach second base in the first five full innings of the game, that coming in the first inning. The sophomore right-hander struck out seven batters during that time while retiring 10 straight at one point.
Meanwhile, center fielder David Barkholz hit a solo home run with one out in the third inning to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. His round-tripper was his team-leading sixth of the season. Five of his homers have been solo shots.
NIU broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the sixth inning when Joe Mazzuca doubled to left-center field, scoring Josh Owens from second base to knot the game, 1-1. Following an intentional walk to Dan Urban to put runners on first and second base, Mike Santoro singled up the middle to score Mazzuca for a 2-1 NIU lead.
Freshman Tyler Wasserman was hit by a pitch on the left forearm to lead off the seventh inning and had to be pinch-ran for by Jayson Selgo. After a pitching change, Barkholz hit into a fielder's choice for the first out. Jeff Warnock then hit into a fielder's choice, but advanced to second on an errant relay to first base, placing him on second base with two outs. Josh Baughman struck out, though, to end the game.
Both Barkholz (double, home run) and Steve Raszka (two singles) were 2-for-3, combining for four of BGSU's six hits in the game. Kelly Hunt finished 0-for-3, ending his career-high hitting streak at 18 games, seven off the school record of 25 set by Mike Combs in 1995.
Saneholtz suffered the loss, dropping to 3-3 overall. He lasted all seven innings, scattering five hits with three walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.
* In game two, the Falcons struck first, and again in the third inning. This time it came off of an infield single by Kelly Hunt that scored Jimmy Lipari from third base.
The Huskies came back, though, with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of a three-run homer by Mike Santoro and a solo homer by Greg Larsen. BGSU answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Hunt singled to right field, scoring Barkholz. An error by the right-fielder allowed Nolan Reimold to score all the way from first base. The two runs cut BGSU's deficit to one run, 4-3.
The two teams traded runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and top of the seventh inning before NIU plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a four-run lead, 8-4.
BGSU came right back in the top of the eighth frame when they scored four runs to knot the score, 8-8. The first three batters reached before Lipari grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Josh Baughman from third base. Hunt later singled to right field again scoring two more runs for BGSU. Nolan Reimold scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch to tie the game.
The Falcons went three-and-out in the top of the ninth before Scott Simon hit a one-out single down the left-field line in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring the game-winning run from second base, 9-8.
Neil Schmitz (0-4) pitched the final one and two-thirds of the game in relief and suffered the loss, giving up one unearned run and four hits with one strikeout. Tom Oestrike started the game for the Falcons, lasting six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) with four walks and three strikeouts. Burke Badenhop pitched two-thirds of an inning giving up one hit and three unearned runs.
BGSU committed five errors in the game and stranded 11 base runners, while NIU left six on base. Reimold finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored while Hunt was 3-for-4 with four RBI.
The Falcons fell to 12-16 overall and 5-7 in the MAC West Division. BGSU travels to Wright State for one non-league contest on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
