BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball schedule has been announced for the 2003-04 season. The Falcons of third-year head coach Curt Miller will play a tough 11-game non-conference slate before diving into the 16-game Mid-American Conference schedule in January of 2004.
"I am excited about our challenging 2003-04 schedule," said Miller. "We look forward to building on our non-conference success from last season, when we won the most non-league games in a decade at BGSU."
BGSU's 12-game home schedule could include as many as five doubleheaders with the Falcon men's team. The Brown and Orange will play four non-conference games and eight MAC contests in Anderson Arena. The MAC office released the league schedule Monday (Aug. 26).
"The most exciting aspect of our schedule is the potential to play as many as five doubleheaders with the men's program," said Miller. "We had the number-one increase in attendance in the MAC last season, and doubleheaders can only raise the level of interest in our program.
"Our attendance of 1,078 fans per home game in '03 was great, and we look forward to even larger and louder crowds in Anderson Arena this coming year."
The Falcons, who return two starters among six letterwinners, will open the season with a Nov. 22 contest at Youngstown State. BGSU then begins the home portion of the schedule with a Nov. 25 game vs. Detroit. That game will be the first half of a hoops doubleheader at Anderson.
BGSU then heads to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Flint Hills Resources Islander Classic over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Brown and Orange will face Southeast Missouri State (Nov. 28) and either Prairie View or host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Nov. 29).
The Brown and Orange will open the month of December with a road game vs. Bucknell (Dec. 3), before returning home for Saturday games vs. IPFW (Dec. 6) and Oakland (Dec. 13). The IPFW game likely will be part of another doubleheader, as the Falcon men host Northwestern that day.
BGSU completes the pre-Christmas slate with a Dec. 22 game at IUPUI, then the Falcons will head to Richmond, Ky., for two games in the EKU Comfort Suites Classic a week later. The Brown and Orange willl meet host Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 29) and Morehead State (Dec. 30) in that tournament.
The Falcons open the month of January, and close the non-conference schedule, with a Jan. 3 home game vs. Cleveland State, another possible doubleheader. Four days later (Jan. 7), BG opens MAC play by hosting defending West Division co-champion Ball State. The Brown and Orange will play home-and-home series with four West Division teams -- BSU, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and arch-rival Toledo -- while meeting divisional rivals Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan once apiece. The Falcons will travel to EMU (Jan. 27) and host defending MAC Tournament champion WMU (Feb. 7). The Falcons will meet each of the six East Division opponents once in 2003-04.
Four of the Falcons' seven MAC games during the month of January are slated for Anderson Arena, including home tilts vs. Akron (Jan. 14), CMU (Jan. 17) and Buffalo (Jan. 31). January road contests include trips to NIU (Jan. 10), UT (Jan. 21) and EMU.
In February, the Falcons play at Miami (Feb. 3) before hosting WMU. Then, the Brown and Orange will play road games vs. Ohio (Feb. 11) and CMU (Feb. 14) before returning home for a two-game series. The Falcons will host NIU on Feb. 18, then will meet Kent State on Feb. 21, the same day the Falcon men will be home for an ESPN Bracket Buster game.
BGSU takes to the road again, for games vs. Marshall (Feb. 25) and BSU (Feb. 29), before closing the regular season with a March 2 game vs. Toledo, the West Division regular-season co-champs from a year ago.
"The West Division of the MAC is a war every night," said Miller. "But, I hope to be in contention for a title when we finish our regular season playing Ball State and Toledo, the reigning MAC West co-champions, in a three-day span."
The Kraft MAC Tournament begins on Saturday, March 6, with five games at campus sites. Once the smoke clears, the eight remaining teams will head to Cleveland's Gund Arena for quarterfinal action on March 10. The semifinals are set for March 12, with the championship game slated for March 13 at Gund.
Starting times will be announced in the near future, but most home games will be set to start at 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 1:00 p.m. on weekend dates.
