Falcons Close September Vs. Valpo, Toledo

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, riding a three-match home winning streak, will look to take some of that success on the road Friday (Sept. 26) ... on that date, the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (3-5-1, 1-1-1 Mid-American Conference) will visit Valparaiso University for a non-conference match, with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. locally (5:30 p.m. Eastern) at VU's Eastgate Field.
Then, the Brown and Orange will return home, and return to MAC play, with a Sunday (Sept. 28) match vs. the University of Toledo ... that match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field ... the UT contest will be part of a soccer doubleheader at Cochrane, with the Falcon men's team facing Michigan at approximately 3:30 p.m.
This week's action ends a nine-match stretch which sees the team play seven times at Cochrane Field ... following the UT match, the Falcons will begin the month of October with five consecutive road contests.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his fourth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 32-33-6 ... he has led BGSU to the two finest seasons in school history to date ... last season, Richards performed one of the top coaching jobs in the MAC, if not the Midwest, guiding the Brown and Orange to a 12-8-2 record and a fourth-place MAC finish ... Richards, who came to BG after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her fourth season with the Falcon program as well ... Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000 ... Darin Karbler is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach.

The Falcons went 2-1 last week, with both wins coming at Cochrane Field ... on Wednesday (Sept. 17), the Brown and Orange suffered a 3-0 loss at Detroit ... redshirt sophomore Ali Shingler made five saves for BG ... the Falcons posted a 2-1, come-from-behind win vs. Akron Friday (Sept. 19), scoring twice in the last 14 minutes of the second half ... soph Samantha Meister scored BG's first goal, and classmate Ashley Wentzel got the match winner with only 44 seconds on the clock ... Shingler made two saves in the win ... Sunday (Sept. 21), the Falcons got a pair of goals from junior Kristy Coppes and another from sophomore Britt Anderson in a 3-0 win over Wright State ... Shingler and senior Jenifer Kernahan each played 45 minutes in net to combine for the shutout.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU returned 16 letterwinners, including a whopping 10 starters, from last year's team ... junior Kristy Coppes, the team's leading scorer in each of her first two seasons at BGSU, again paces the team with four goals and nine points ... senior co-captain Carrie Richards and sophomore Samantha Meister each have two goals and five points ... junior Nikki Pucillo and sophs Leah Eggleton and Julie Trundle each have two assists to share the team lead ... THE OPPONENTS
Valparaiso has an overall record of 0-7 on the season ... other than a 4-0 loss to Western Michigan on Aug. 31, the Crusaders have been in every match ... VU has lost four matches by a single goal, and dropped the other two by two-goal margins ... last weekend, Valpo lost a 2-1 overtime decision at Northern Iowa before falling at Drake by a 3-1 score ... four different Crusaders have scored one goal apiece, and sophomore Emily King leads the team with three points ... three goalies have shared time to date, with sophomore Danielle Guerra leading the Crusaders in minutes played (277:11) and goals-against average (1.95) ... Valpo returned 14 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's team that went 5-13-1 overall, but 4-1-0 in Mid-Continent Conference play ... head coach Stephen Anthony has a record of 31-68-4 in his sixth season, all with the Crusaders ... the school's athletics web site is www.valpo.edu/athletics.
Toledo enters the week with a 3-5-0 record, and the Rockets will bring a 2-2-0 MAC ledger to Cochrane Field Sunday ... prior to the BGSU match, UT will host Detroit in Friday (Sept. 26) action ... last weekend, the Rockets split a pair of home matches, losing to Kent State, 3-1, before downing Akron by a 2-1 count ... Toledo's other two MAC matches also came at home, vs. Eastern Michigan (a 3-2, double-OT loss) and Central Michigan (a 2-0 win) ... senior Melissa Lesage leads the team in scoring, with five of the team's 11 goals and a total of 10 points this fall ... sophomore GK Molly Patterson has played in seven of the Rockets' eight matches to date, and is 2-5 with a 1.95 GAA ... last year, the Rockets went 8-8-2 overall, and placed ninth in the MAC with a 4-6-2 league mark ... head coach Brad Evans welcomed back 16 letterwinners, including seven starters, from that team ... THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Valparaiso by a 3-0 margin in the all-time series between the teams ... last season, (Oct. 18, 2002), Britt Anderson, Samantha Meister and Katie Piening all scored in a 3-0 win at Cochrane Field ... BGSU also posted a 5-1 home win on Aug. 29, 1999 ... the Falcons earned a 2-1 victory in the lone previous meeting in Valparaiso (Sept. 1, 1998).
The Falcons hold a 3-2-1 advantage in the series with Toledo, but the Rockets have a win and a tie in the only two meetings at Cochrane Field ... last year, the Falcons got a Julie Trundle goal for a 1-0 win, BG's third consecutive victory at UT's Scott Park ... the teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the last meeting in BG, on Sept. 9, 2001 ... Kristy Coppes had a goal in that match.

COPPES ON CAREER SCORING CHARTS
Junior Kristy Coppes scored a pair of goals in the Falcons' 3-0 win over Wright State Sunday (Sept. 21) ... Coppes now has 28 goals in her career, extending her own school record ... additionally, Coppes now has a career total of 61 points, good for second in BGSU history ... she trails school record-holder Jill Conover (65 points from 1999-2002) by just four points.
COPPES GETS THE WINNER
Junior Kristy Coppes had the match-winning goal Sunday, her second of the season and the seventh of her career ... she is now tied with Jill Conover for first place on that Falcon career list ... Coppes' multiple-goal match was the sixth of her career, but the first of the season for a Falcon player.
GOOD TIME FOR HER FIRST GOAL
Sophomore Ashley Wentzel certainly picked a good time to score her first collegiate goal ... Wentzel was at the far post to convert a Julie Trundle cross with just 44 seconds left in regulation vs. Akron Friday, giving the Falcons a 2-1 win ... Wentzel had entered the UA match with four career points, all on assists.
KENNEDY, LINCOLN, TRUNDLE AND WENTZEL ALL HAVE SEVEN LETTERS
Ashley Wentzel's goal vs. Akron was the team's latest goal in regulation time since last Oct. 13 at Eastern Michigan ... in that EMU match, Julie Trundle was at the far post to head home a cross with just six seconds remaining, as the teams battled to a 2-2 tie ... Friday vs. Akron, as mentioned, Trundle crossed the ball to Wentzel on the winning goal ... Wentzel had made the crossing pass to Trundle on the late goal in the EMU match last year.
HOME COOKIN'
After beginning the home portion of the 2003 schedule with a pair of losses, the Falcons are now 3-0-1 in the last four matches at Cochrane Field ... BGSU will take a three-match home winning streak into Sunday's Toledo match.
TRUNDLE, MEISTER ON CAREER LISTS
Sophomore Julie Trundle's assist on Sunday was the 10th of her career ... Trundle now ranks fifth on the BGSU career assists list ... with 20 career points, she is 12th on that school list ... classmate Samantha Meister's assist in Sunday's match moved her career point total to 22 ... she now ranks ninth in school history on that list ... Meister, who missed seven matches last year due to injury, has amassed her 22 points in only 24 career contests.
SPREADING AROUND THE STARTS
Sophomore Molly Bremen made her first start of the season in the Akron match ... Bremen becomes the 18th different Falcon to have started at least one match this year to date.
NOTING THE FALCONS
Two Falcons registered their first points of the season in the Wright State match, as sophomore Britt Anderson scored BG's second goal, and junior Jenny Berlovan had an assist on the Falcons' third and final goal of the day ... Anderson and Berlovan bring the total to 14 different Falcons who have scored at least one point in 2003 ... freshman Lindsay Carter had picked up her first collegiate point, drawing an assist in the Akron match ... senior goalkeeper Jenifer Kernahan saw her first playing time last week ... Kernahan, the starting catcher on the Falcons softball team, made her women's soccer debut Wednesday at Detroit, but did not face a shot on goal in her 12:37 of action ... she played the entire second half of the WSU match, splitting the shutout with Ali Shingler ... Kernahan made the first four saves of her career in that contest ... redshirt sophomore Kylene Newell played the final 10:58 of the WSU contest ... for Newell, the playing time was her first since the 2001 season ... originally a walk-on to the Falcon program, she played in one match in her inaugural season of 2001, but did not see match action last fall ... the Falcons now hold a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series with WSU ... BGSU posted a one-goal win over the Raiders two years ago (2-1; Oct. 9, 2001), a two-goal victory last year (3-1; Nov. 1, 2002) and a three-goal win Sunday ... the Falcon starting lineup for the Akron match included no fewer than eight sophomores (including one redshirt soph in Shingler) ... a pair of juniors and one senior rounded out Andy Richards' starting 11 vs. the Zips ...
