FALCONS GO 2-0 IN EKU CLASSIC
The Falcons finished the EKU Comfort Suites Classic with a perfect 2-0 record after posting wins over host Eastern Kentucky (70-57; Dec. 29) and Morehead State (65-51; Dec. 30) ... the last time BGSU went undefeated in an in-season tourney setting was Dec. 2-3, 1988, when the Brown and Orange downed Villanova and Iowa State to win the Illini Classic ... since that time, BG teams have gone 1-1 in 16 in-season tournaments, 2-1 in one tourney and 0-2 three times ... it should be noted, however, that the Falcons have won the MAC Tournament four times during that span.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU enters the Cleveland State game with a record of 6-4 on the season ... the Falcons have won two consecutive games, BG's third such streak of the young season, and the Brown and Orange looks to put together a three-game winning streak for the first time in 2003-04 ... most recently, as mentioned, the Falcons posted a pair of double-digit wins at the EKU Comfort Suites Classic, downing host Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State.
Senior Stefanie Wenzel leads the Falcons with 15.5 points per game, and is averaging 4.3 rebounds per contest ... three freshmen are ranked among the top-five in the Falcons' balanced scoring attack ... freshman Liz Honegger has 10.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, ranking second in each category, and she leads the Falcons with 1.7 blocked shots per game ... freshman Ali Mann has 10.2 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds per contest, and has three double-doubles on the year ... senior Lindsay Austin also has three double-doubles, and has 10.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and a team-leading 5.4 assists per contest ... freshman Megan Thorburn has 9.0 points and 3.7 caroms on the year ... junior Kelly Kapferer and sophomore Casey McDowell average 5.6 and 4.6 points off the bench, respectively.
Austin, Mann, Thorburn and Wenzel each have started all 10 games ... Honegger has started each of the last nine contests.
The Falcons are shooting .420 from the field this season, including a .378 rate from three-point land, and BGSU has a .728 free-throw conversion percentage ... the opponents have shot .394 from the floor, .325 from the arc and .670 from the line to date.
BG is 2-1 at home, 2-3 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site games this year ... last season, the Falcons went 6-6 at home, 5-9 on the road and 1-1 on neutral courts ... in MAC contests, BGSU finished 4-4 at home and 1-7 away from Anderson Arena in 2002-03.
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State will invade Anderson Arena with a 4-6 record, and the Vikings are coming off a 34-point home win (88-54) over Youngstown State ... CSU has won three of the last four games, including a win over Louisville (79-68; Dec. 18) after a 1-5 start ... the Vikes are 1-2 on the road to date, with the win coming at Robert Morris ... individually, senior forwards Shannon Sword and Ashley Schrock have paced the team ... Sword leads the team with 18.1 points per game, and also has 5.3 rebounds ... Schrock has 12.2 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds, and she also leads the Vikings with 4.3 assists per game ... sophomore guard Erin Martin has 8.0 points, while junior guard Maria Rickards (7.6 ppg) and senior center Karyn Woloszynek (4.0 ppg) round out the team's probable starting lineup for head coach Kate Peterson ... Peterson, in her first season as a collegiate head coach, inherited 10 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's team that went 11-18 overall and 7-9 in the Horizon League ... the school's athletics web site is www.csuvikings.com.
THE BGSU-CSU SERIES
The Falcons hold an 8-3 lead over Cleveland State in the all-time series between the teams, and the Falcons have won the last six meetings ... last season's meeting, however, was the first since Feb. 20, 1988 ... BGSU went to Cleveland and came away with a 62-59 win last season (Dec. 14, 2002) ... BGSU is 5-1 in home games vs. the Vikes ... each of the first six games in the series were decided by 10 points or less, with two of those contests going to overtime ... the next four meetings all resulted in BG wins of 19 points or more, prior to last year's three-point game.
BGSU-CSU TIES
Despite the schools' relatively close proximity, BGSU and Cleveland State have met just once in the last 15 years ... still, there are some ties between the two programs ...
LAST TIME OUT
Senior Stefanie Wenzel scored 27 points as the Falcons downed Morehead State, 65-51, Tuesday (Dec. 30) in the EKU Comfort Suites Classic ... BGSU finished the tourney with a 2-0 record ... Wenzel had 21 of her points in the second half, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the Falcons' 33 points in the final 20 minutes ... her game-high eight field goals included a 4-for-6 performance from three-point range ... Wenzel was the only BGSU player in double digits ... freshman Liz Honegger and redshirt sophomore Casey McDowell each had nine points, while senior Lindsay Austin added eight ... Megen Gearhart led MSU with 15 points, while Kandi Brown added 12 ... Morehead got out to a quick start ... after Honegger opened the scoring with a three-pointer, the Eagles scored the next 11 points, holding the Falcons scoreless for nearly six minutes ... with MSU holding a 12-5 lead a moment later, however, it was BG's turn to make a run ... freshman Carin Horne's second field goal of the game ignited an 8-0 Falcon scoring burst, and McDowell followed a conventional three-point play with a shot from behind the arc, giving BG a 13-12 lead ... following a Brown triple, the Falcons scored the next 10 points, starting an 18-3 run that gave the Brown and Orange a 23-15 lead ... BG led by as many as 13 points before taking an 11-point edge into the lockerroom, 32-21 ... in the second half, the Eagles narrowed the lead to eight points on three occasions, the last at 42-34 midway through the half ... but, a Wenzel triple began a 10-0 BGSU run over the next 3:21 ... Wenzel scored seven of the Falcons' 10 points during that time ... MSU rallied, as an 8-0 run cut the Falcon lead to nine points, 54-45, with just under five minutes left ... but, Wenzel hit a pair of free throws, and the lead never dropped below double digits again ... Wenzel made two more treys to provide some insurance ... the Falcons held a 47-35 advantage in rebounding, with Wenzel and freshman Ali Mann each grabbing eight and Honegger seven ... Austin and Mann each had four assists to lead the Brown and Orange, and Austin led all players with four steals on the night ... the Falcons committed 20 turnovers, but forced 22 by the Eagles ... BGSU went to the free-throw line 31 times, making 22, with Wenzel going 7-for-8 ... MSU was just 5-for-13 from the stripe.
HIGH PRAISE INDEED
The Falcons received some kind words from one of the game's top coaches, Georgia's Andy Landers ... following the team's shootaround on Tuesday (Dec. 30), the day after the BGSU-Eastern Kentucky game, the Falcon players vacated the McBrayer Arena gym to let the Lady Bulldogs take the floor for their shootaround ... Landers crossed the floor and headed into the hallway to speak to the Falcons, telling them, among other things, "I really enjoyed watching you play last night" ... Georgia, like BGSU, went 2-0 at the EKU Classic.
BLOCK PARTY FOR HONEGGER
Freshman Liz Honegger, in just the ninth game of her BGSU career, already has etched her name into the Falcon record books ... Honegger set a school record by blocking seven shots in the win over Eastern Kentucky ... the old record of six was set by Sue Pokelsek, and matched twice (in a month) by BGSU Hall-of-Famer Angie Bonner ... Honegger had a double-double in the EKU game, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
STEF'S SCORING STREAK
Senior Stefanie Wenzel had a game-high 27 points in the win over Morehead State, tying her own BGSU season high ... Wenzel has now scored in double digits in nine consecutive games, a career-long streak ... her previous best was a six-game double-digit scoring streak late in her sophomore season of 2001-02.
AUSTIN'S ASSIST TOTAL
Senior Lindsay Austin had seven assists vs. Eastern Kentucky and four more against Morehead State ... in the process, she took over sole possession of fourth place on the BGSU career list ... Austin now has 391 assists, having passed Jaymee Wappes (387 assists from 1996-2000) on that list ... Austin likely will end her career in that fourth-place spot ... third place belongs to Paulette Backstrom (1985-89), who had 559 career assists ... Dee Knoblauch (1979-83) holds the BG record with 673 career assists ... Austin is the MAC's active career assists leader.
NON-LEAGUE SUCCESS
The Falcons' win over MSU guaranteed the team a winning non-conference season for the second year in a row ... BGSU is 6-4 heading into the final non-league game this season, after going 7-4 in non-conference action a year ago ... the last time the Falcons put together back-to-back winning records in non-MAC play came a decade ago, when BG had three-straight winning non-league records from 1991-92 to 1993-94.
FALCON FROSH AMONG MAC LEADERS
Bowling Green is the only MAC team to have two freshmen among the league leaders in both scoring and rebounding, according to the latest conference statistics (through Dec. 31) ... Ali Mann is tied for 26th in scoring (10.2 ppg) and ranks seventh in rebounding (7.9 rpg) ... Liz Honegger is deadlocked for 21st in scoring (10.9 ppg) and is 14th in rebounding (6.7).
BGSU'S BOARDWORK PAYING OFF
The Falcons had more rebounds than their opponents on only four occasions during all of last season ... through 10 games this year, BGSU is 7-2-1 in that category (having held the rebounding advantage seven times, with a draw in another contest) ... the Falcons are outrebounding the opponents by a margin of 3.3 boards per game.
