Bowling Green, Ohio - Freshman Derek Whitmore scored at 2:53 of overtime to lead Bowling Green to a 3-2 victory over the University of Windsor on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena. The two teams combined to score four goals in the third period before Whitmore's game-winner gave the Falcons the exhibition game victory in OT.
Freshman Michael Hodgson and sophomore Jonathan Sigalet assisted on the power-play goal by Whitmore. The shot ended up being BGSU's 46th of the night, outshooting the Lancers 46-13 in the game. However, after two periods the game was scoreless.
"Our inability to finish off plays put us in a hockey game, which I feel good that were able to play in an exhibition game where we needed to make plays down the stretch," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "I thought we had some pucks on the doorstep. Their goaltender was outstanding tonight. That's another good test for us. That's the same type of goaltending were going to see night in and night out in our conference."
It wasn't until the third period that both teams started finding the back of the net. BGSU's Bryan Dobek scored a power-play goal at 5:21 of the third period with assists from Taylor Christie and Jeremy Bronson, for a 1-0 Falcon lead. Christie then added to the lead with a goal just 33 seconds later (5:54). Ben Geelan and Rich Meloche assisted on the goal for a 2-0 Falcon advantage.
But, Windsor answered later in the third period with two goals of their own in a short span. The first came from Graeme Lindsay at 14:05 (PPG) and the second came via Kyle Trudell (PPG) at 16:21. All of a sudden the game was tied, 2-2, with just under four minutes to play in regulation.
Windsor goalie Reese Kalleitner played exceptionally, stopping 43 of BGSU's 46 shots, including all 17 in the first period and all 14 in the second period. The Falcons held a 31-7 shot advantage after two period, but were scoreless. On the other end, Jordan Sigalet stopped 11 of 13 shots faced.
"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," said Whitmore. "I had a goal when I was a young kid to play Division I hockey at a competitive level and I'm fortunate enough to achieve that goal. It was just good to play against another team. It felt good to hit another guy from another team."
BGSU is no stranger to overtime, having tied a school record in 2003-04 with 11 extra-time games. The Falcons were 1-1-9 in those contests.
The Falcons were 2-for-14 on the power play while Windsor was 2-for-7.
"I thought for the most part our power play created some good chances. I think we got a pretty good flavor of how the new rules are going to effect the game. All in all I think we learned a lot from this game," said Paluch.
The Falcons kick off the regular season next weekend with a two-game series at Union College in Schenectedy, N.Y. (Oct. 22-23). Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. face-offs.
