Falcons Set for 2004-05 Home Opener
The Falcons begin the home portion of their 2004-05 schedule this weekend when they host Lake Superior State University for a two-game series (Oct. 29-30) at the BGSU Ice Arena. Friday's game is scheduled for the normal 7:05 p.m. face-off while Saturday's game will be a special matinee start at 2:35 p.m. BGSU is 6-4 in its last 10 home openers.
BGSU vs. Lake Superior
Overall, BGSU leads the series 66-53-7. The two teams skated to two 0-0 ties last season while splitting the other two games. The 0-0 ties were just the fifth and sixth scoreless ties in CCHA history.
Lake Superior Lakers
Lake Superior is 0-4-0 entering Bowling Green, but played nationally-ranked Michigan tough in a pair of games last weekend. In fact, of their first four games, three have been decided by one goal including an overtime loss at Colgate on Oct. 16 (2-1).
Fantastic Start for Falcons
BGSU's two victories at Union last weekend marked the first time since 1996 that the Falcons began the season with two victories. That season BGSU opened 6-0. The pair of wins against the Dutchmen also marked the first road sweep for the Falcons since the first round of the 2001 CCHA Playoffs at Miami (March 8-9, 2001). The last time the Falcons opened the season on the road with a sweep came in the 1988 season when BGSU swept Alaska Anchorage (7-3 and 10-2).
Matsumoto Makes Memorable Debut, Named CCHA Rookie of the Week
FR Jonathan Matsumoto was named the CCHA Rookie of the Week on Monday, Oct. 25. The Orleans, Ontario native recorded two goals and two assists in a weekend sweep at Union College. Matsumoto had a great collegiate debut on Oct. 22, notching a PPG and two assists in a 5-1 victory against the Dutchmen. He finished plus-two in the game. The next night he scored the game's only goal (PPG) to lead BGSU to a 1-0 win. The 5-foot-11, 204 pound forward scored two of BGSU's three power-play goals on the weekend and was named second and third star, respectively, in the two games.
Reversing Last Year's Tendencies
BGSU scored five goals in its season-opener after netting five or more goals in a game just five times all last season. The very next night, the Falcons captured a 1-0 victory after playing in 27 games last year that were decided by two goals or less. The Falcons were 8-10-9 in those games, including 4-1-3 over the final six weeks of the season.
Home Sweet Home
BGSU finished the 2003-04 season with a 7-6-5 home record, the first .500 or better season at home since 2001 for the Falcons.
