Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team held its annual "Falcon Face-Off' on Saturday evening at the BGSU Ice Arena, with Team Orange prevailing over Team White in overtime, 5-4. Freshman Derek Whitmore took a pass from junior Bryan Dobek and shot a one-timer past goalie Bob Frazee at 3:10 of overtime for the game-winner.
There were two 23-minute periods and a five-minute, four-on-four, overtime period.
Sophomore James Unger had tied the game with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation when he pounded in a rebound from the top of the crease past Keith Van Gels. Team White had an extra attacker on Unger's goal.
"Offensively, we made some creative plays that gave us some tremendous scoring chances," said third-year head coach Scott Paluch. "We had some good outlet passes and some tight, down-low passes that are going to allow us to score some more goals."
Two of the "White" goals were credited via a skills competition that was held at the intermission. In that, junior defenseman Don Morrison (White) defeated senior forward Alex Rogosheske (Orange) in the fastest-skater competition, and Team White also got a point from Unger and sophomore Rich Meloche converting on their penalty shots. Dobek was the only "Orange" player to score on the penalty shot.
Of the seven goals scored in the game, freshmen Falcons had a hand in five of them. Freshman John Mazzei scored at 8:58 of the first period with an assist from junior Brett Pilkington to give "Orange" a 1-0 lead. The two hooked up again later in the first period, although this time it was Pilkington getting the assist from Mazzei and freshman Michael Hodgson (19:00). Then with just under two minutes left in the 23-minute first period, junior Mike Falk scored with an assist from Hodgson for a 3-0 Orange lead.\
"The young guys adapted well to the game and to the pace of the game," said Paluch about his freshmen.
After the two points from the skills competition at intermission made it a 3-2 game, senior Ryan Minnabarriet knotted the score with a goal at 44 seconds into the second period. The power-play goal was assisted by Steve Brudzewski. Team Orange answered right back with freshman Alex Foster scoring unassisted at 2:03 for a 4-3 lead.
Senior goalie Jordan Sigalet played the first period for Team White while junior Jon Horrell played for Team Orange. In the second period and overtime, Van Gels played for Team Orange and Frazee played for Team White.
BGSU continues its preseason next Friday, October 15, when its hosts the University of Windsor in an exhibition game at the BGSU Ice Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
