Falcons Host Akron On Tuesday Night In MAC Tournament

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team and head coach Denise Van De Walle will play host on Tuesday evening, as the University of Akron Zips will enter Anderson Arena for a 7:00 p.m. showdown in the opening round of the 2004 Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Falcons are seeded sixth, while the Zips sit at 11th in the 13-team tournament.

Twice In Nine Days
These exact same two teams faced off last Sunday in Akron, Ohio, with the Falcons coming away victorious in a 3-0 sweep of the Zips. The win snapped a four-match losing streak.
The highlight of the match was sophomore Chrissy Gothke, who registered 31 digs (career-high) in only three matches.
Offensively the Falcons were led by senior captain Melissa Mohr. She posted a team-best 12 kills, but also chipped in with two blocks. Other offensive outbursts included Taylor Twite (8), Maggie Karges (8), Stephanie Swiger (8), Amber Mareski (7) and Emily Manser (7).
Akron had a trio of hitters that recorded 40 of the teams 51 kills. Molly Rutledge (14), Jennifer Stewart (13) and Emily Kocinski (13) led the Zips offensively.
Falcons Earn Home Tournament Bid
The BGSU volleyball team, behind a balanced offensive attack, downed the University at Buffalo, 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-23) Saturday evening inside Anderson Arena. The win allowed the Falcons to host this Tuesday.
BGSU hit .312 for the match, and used at least five kills from six different players to earn the win. Senior Melissa Mohr led the way with 12 kills, with Taylor Twite, 10, and Maggie Karges, 10, also reaching double figures. Sophomore setter Chrissy Gothke recorded a career-high eight kills, while Emily Manser and Stephanie Swiger each chipped in with five.
Freshmen Madeline Means and Elizabeth Simon were the top two defensive performers for the Falcons. Means posted a career-high 26 digs to lead the Falcons, while Simon finished with 12 digs.
Chrissy Gothke, filling in for the injured Amber Mareski, had a solid all-around night, posting 38 assists (career-high), eight kills (on a .667 hitting percentage) and six digs.
