BGSU Takes on Non-Conference Foe Wayne State
BGSU plays Wayne State in a home-and-home series this week, travelling to Compuware Arena on Thursday (7:05 p.m.) and hosting the Warriors on Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena (5:05 p.m.).
Falcons Get Votes in Both Polls
BGSU this week received 13 points (21st) in the USCHO.com/CSTV poll and seven points (20th) in the USA Today/American Hockey poll. The USCHO.com/CSTV Poll is compiled by U.S. College Hockey Online, and consists of 40 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 12 beat writers from across the country. The 10th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association.
BGSU vs. Wayne State
BGSU leads the series, 2-0-1. The two teams last met on Jan. 21, 2003, at Joe Louis Arena when JR Mike Falk scored the game-winner with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation. SR Jordan Sigalet picked up his first collegiate win on Nov. 17, 2001, against the Warriors in a 4-1 victory. In the win he stopped 29 of 30 shots faced. The first meeting between the two teams came Nov. 16, 2001, in a 4-4 tie at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State is a member of College Hockey America and enters the game with a 6-3-1 overall record and are 1-0-1 in the CHA. The Warriors have won four of their last six games. They are coached by Bill Wilkerson who is in his sixth season at WSU and 23rd season of coaching overall. Stavros Paskaris and Tylor Michel each lead WSU with 10 points while goalies Matt Kelly (2.21 ga./.920) and Will Hooper (2.77 ga./.896) have split time in net.
Matsumoto Named Rooke of the Week, AGAIN
FR Jonathan Matsumoto was named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, November 15. The Orleans, Ontario native had the second three-point game of his short career on Nov. 13, leading BGSU to a 6-4 victory at UNO. Matsumoto scored his second GWG of the season in the game and added another goal and assist in the win. He also had a goal in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Mavericks and finished with three PPGs on the weekend. His three goals came on just five shots in the two games (.600 pct.). He leads the Falcons in total points (10), goals scored (6), and power-play goals (5). He was also named CCHA Rookie of the Week on October 25 after scoring a PPG and two assists in his career debut at Union College.
Matsumoto Among Nation's Leaders
The 5-foot-11, 204 pound forward is tied for third nationally for points-per-game by a rookie (1.25 pg.), having registered a point in six of BGSU's eight games this season. Matsumoto is also T-2nd CCHA/T-5th nationally with 0.62 PPGs-per-game, T-3rd CCHA/T-16th nationally with .75 goals-per-game, T-1st in CCHA with two GWGs, and 7th in CCHA with .286 shot pct. (6-of-21).
Fantastic Start for Falcons
BGSU continues to have its best start in eight years with its 5-2-1 overall record. The 1996-97 team began the year with a 6-0 record. BGSU is above .500 in the CCHA for the first time since October of 1999. That season the Falcons started the year 3-1-0 in their first four league contests.
