Dayton is only the second Falcon women's soccer student-athlete to be named to the Academic All-District First Team. She joins Jill Conover (2001) on that short list.
Shingler, who earned third-team honors last year, joins Conover as the only two-time selections in Falcon history.
A native of Tucson, Ariz., Dayton has played in all 21 of BGSU's matches this season, making 17 starts. Primarily a defender, she has picked up two assists this year, coming in wins over Duquesne and Cleveland State. Dayton, who was named the Falcons' Most Valuable defender for the 2003 season after moving to the back line from her forward spot midway through last season, has 12 career points on a pair of goals and eight assists. She has played in 64 career contests, having made 44 starts.
Shingler, a native of Grove City, Ohio, is in her second season as the Falcons' starting goalkeeper. She has started 18 matches this season to date, and has 84 saves and a goals-against average of 1.53. Shingler is on pace to record the third-lowest GAA in a season in school history. Her four complete-match shutouts this season tie her for second on the BGSU list, and bring her career total to eight, also the second-highest total in school annals. Her back-to-back shutouts, against Akron and Miami, were part of a career-long shutout streak of 268:02, the second-longest in BGSU history. Her other shutouts came vs. Buffalo and Toledo, with the latter win clinching a Mid-American Conference Tournament berth for the Brown and Orange.
The Academic All-District IV University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
The 2004-05 academic year marks the fourth time a women's soccer team has been selected. Prior to the 2001-02 academic year, women's soccer student-athletes were part of the Fall/Winter Sports At-Large ballot.
The Falcons are 8-11-2 heading into Friday's (Nov. 5) MAC Tournament semifinal round. BGSU, the eighth seed for the eight-team tourney, posted an upset win at #1 seed Kent State on Tuesday (Nov. 2), and now will face fourth-seeded Western Michigan in a match beginning at 11:00 a.m. in Athens, Ohio.
