LORETTO, Pa. - Quoting Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Curt Miller after the Falcons' 80-74 overtime victory at Saint Francis University Saturday (Dec. 18)...
"This was a huge win, and I told the kids that it was their win. It wasn't the coaching staff's win, we didn't do anything magical. It was their win; they stayed tough and they stayed together."
"People may not realize that this team (Saint Francis) doesn't lose. They don't lose at home; they don't lose, period. They have been in the NCAA Tournament eight of the last nine years, and they have four senior starters. I can't be more proud of our team for winning a close game. We have lost two close games earlier this year, and close games are what make and break your season. We could be sitting here (with a record of) 7-2, but we could also be 4-5. I can't be prouder; the kids stuck together, and that was a huge win for us."
"(At halftime), we talked a little bit about X's and O's, but the majority was about heart and desire. This group needs to fight all the time. This team has extreme amounts of talent, but if you look at the hustle stats -- rebounding, loose balls -- those plays were going Saint Francis' way in the first half. We needed to lay it on the line. (We talked about) desire, heart and playing for each other. I thought we saw a more inspired, gutty team in the second half."
(On Kate Achter)
"I think you are seeing the growth of a young point guard. We see it every day in practice. I am really pleased with her progress, and I think Kate will be on the floor for us a lot the rest of the year. She still makes mistakes, of course, but you can never question her heart and effort, and I think we're seeing her mature and get better and better each day."
(On Monday's game vs. Robert Morris)
"They have a relatively new coach, who has brought in a number of impact players. They have already beaten two MAC teams, and they beat Duquesne, who beat us. It is a team with a huge amount of athleticism, and they have already won more games this year than (last year). They have the leading rebounder in the country; not top-10, not in the top 100; the leading rebounder in the country. She (Sugiery Monsac) already has had two games with at least 21 rebounds this year. So, we will have our hands full on Monday, but you've got the Christmas break after that game, and I hope that we can come out, play inspired basketball, grow from this win and look to build a winning streak."
