Falcons Head East for Ledyard Classic, Hosted By Dartmouth (Dec. 29-30)
Bowling Green will face host Dartmouth (7 p.m.) while Providence will face Vermont (4 p.m.) on the first day of the Ledyard Classic at Thompson Arena in Hanover, New Hampshire, on Wednesday, December 29. The losers on Wednesday will square off in the consolation game on Thursday, December 30, at 4 p.m. while the winners will go head-to-head for the Ledyard Classic title at 7 p.m. Dartmouth has hosted its holiday tournament since 1978. It was at one time called the Auld Lang Syne Tournament and it was played annually from 1978-1988 before Dartmouth and Vermont went to hosting every other year.
Falcons Face Dartmouth
Bowling Green has met the Big Green just twice before, both in Holiday Tournaments, and are 1-1-0. The Falcons faced Dartmouth on Dec. 29, 1977 at the Cornell Holiday Festival (5-2 Falcon win) and then faced DC on Dec. 27, 1997 at the Sheraton/USAirways Tournament (6-2 loss). This is the first appearance by BGSU in the Ledyard Classic.
Falcons Racking Up the "W"s
This marks the fastest time BGSU has recorded eight victories since 1995 when the Falcons were 8-1-1 by Nov. 17. BGSU also picked up its seventh victory before the month of December for the first time since 1996.
Showing Improvement
For more signs that Bowling Green is making strides you don't need to look any further than one year ago at this time. Last season at the Christmas Break, the Falcons were 2-7-3 with seven points and in 12th place in the CCHA (12 games). Heading into the Ledyard Classic, BGSU is 5-5-2 with 12 points and fifth in the CCHA (12 games), a difference of five points and seven positions in the conference standings.
Sitko Showing Some Offense
JR Jon Sitko recorded a career-high two assists on Dec. 10 vs. #4 Michigan. The junior's two helpers were his first points since a goal in the season-opener back on Oct. 22, snapping a seven-game pointless streak. He had missed six games due to injury. Sitko also finished plus-1 and did not take a penalty in the two games vs. the Wolverines.
Falcon Fans Flock to Ice Arena
On Dec. 11 vs. #4 Michigan, 4,537 fans were in the BGSU Ice Arena to watch the Falcons vs. Wolverines. The crowd was the largest at the BGSU Ice Arena since Feb. 5, 1999, when 4,728 came to see Ohio State take on the Falcons (3-2 OSU win). It was just the 10th crowd of 4,000-plus since 1998.
Dobek "Assisting" the Cause
JR Bryan Dobek recorded a team-high three assists in two games vs. #4 Michigan, including a career-high two helpers on Dec. 10. The junior now has four assists in his last five games after recording seven assists in 36 games last year.
