Turning Back the Clock
Two of the more storied CCHA programs will go head-to-head against each other at the BGSU Ice Arena when the Falcons host Lake Superior for a two-game series this weekend (Feb. 13-14). The two teams have combined to win four of the CCHA's seven national championships. This year marks the 20th anniversary of BGSU's 1984 National Championship title vs. Minnesota-Duluth in Lake Placid, N.Y. (5-4 quadruple overtime).
Honoring 1984 National Championship Team
BGSU will honor the 1984 National Championship squad during the first intermission of Friday's game vs. Lake Superior. That team is the only one in BGSU athletics history to garner a Division I national championship. The team will hold an autograph signing session at 6 p.m. in the south end of the BGSU Ice Arena prior to Friday and Saturday's games. A banquet will be held in their honor Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union at 7 p.m.
BGSU vs. Lake Superior
BGSU leads the series 65-53-6 dating back to Dec. 12, 1970 (4-3 LSSU win). The two teams combined earlier this season to be just the fifth CCHA contest to end in a 0-0 tie (Nov. 15). LSSU won the first meeting of the season, 4-2, on Nov. 14.
Close Shaves...
Out of the 29 games played this season by BGSU, 21 contests have been decided by two goals or less. The Falcons have seven ties, are 2-7 in one-goal games, and 3-2 in two-goal games.
Falcons Set Record for Ties in Season
The 3-3 tie on Feb. 6 at UNO gave BGSU seven ties this season, a new single-season record. It also marked the ninth overtime game that the Falcons have played in this year, two off the school record of 11 set in the 1991-92 season.
Last Six Games Sees BGSU Improve Offense
The Falcons are 3-2-1 in their last six games. Over the course of those six games, BGSU is averaging 3.3 goals-per-game while allowing 2.5 gpp., as well as shooting at a .128 pct. and holding opponents to a .066 shooting pct.
Road Warriors
BGSU notched its third road win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 7. The other two road wins have come at Notre Dame (5-3, Oct. 17) and at Alaska Fairbanks (6-2, Jan. 23).
Saturday Night's Alright for Winning
A 3-1 victory over UNO on Feb. 7 gave BGSU just its second Saturday-night win of the season. The Falcons are now 2-7-5 on Saturday nights with the other win coming Jan. 17 vs. MSU. The Falcons are currently 6-6-2 in Friday night contests, and 0-1-0 on Tuesdays.
