CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University senior Lindsay Austin has earned the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week award, the conference office has announced. Austin, a guard on the Falcon women's basketball team, earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Wenzel, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Sycamore HS), averaged 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 6.0 steals as the Falcons split a pair of games against the MAC's two divisional leaders last week.
Austin began the week by setting a school record with 10 steals in the Falcons' 92-81 loss at Miami (Feb. 3). Then, she hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer, giving the Falcons a 69-67 win over Western Michigan Saturday afternoon (Feb. 7) at Anderson Arena.
In the Miami game, Austin had her fifth double-double of the season, with 13 points and the 10 steals. She also had seven rebounds and six assists (without a turnover) vs. the RedHawks.
Austin played only 25 minutes vs. WMU due to foul trouble, but still had seven points and six assists. With the game clock winding down, she drove and hit the game-winning 10-footer in the lane as the buzzer sounded.
On the week, Austin shot .529 from the field. On the season, she is averaging 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds, and leads the team with 5.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game. Austin, the MAC's active career assists leader, with 447, ranks among BGSU's top-four in both career assists and steals (212).
Austin's honor is her second MAC accolade of the week. On Monday (Feb. 9), she was named the MAC's Player of the Week.
Austin, a visual communication technology (VCT) major, currently maintains a 3.62 cumulative GPA.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller improved to 14-7 overall and 7-3 in MAC play with Wednesday's (Feb. 11) 76-55 win at Ohio. BGSU remains on the road for a Saturday (Feb. 14) game at Central Michigan, starting at 2:00 p.m. The Falcons' next home game is Wednesday, Feb. 18, against Northern Illinois.
