Falcons 10th After Day One Of MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Michigan - The Bowling Green State University track and field team sits in tenth place after day one of the MAC Indoor Championships with three points. Central Michigan holds a 9.5 point lead after day one, tallying 41 points to Kent State's 31.5. Akron is in third with 23 points, Miami follows in fourth with 19, and Eastern Michigan rounds out the top five with 17.5 points.
For the Falcons freshman Parris Bussey placed 14th in the weight throw with a distance of 14.39 meters.
Senior Amber Culp ran an 18:34.18 in the 5,000 meters for a 14th place finish as well.
For the rest of the Falcons squad it was a day of prelims, with several Falcons qualifying for the finals in their events. Junior Valerie Holland qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63, as well as the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.29, a personal best. Amber Walker joins Holland in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 25.04.
Alicia Taylor will join Holland in the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.76, as well as placing in the top eight in the 60-meter hurdles, qualifying for the finals on day two.
Overall, the 2004 Indoor Championships had several MAC records broken. In the 5,000- meters, Toledo senior All-American Briana Shook had a time of 16:42.75, an NCAA qualifying time, which broke the previous record of 16:45.76, set by Ball State's Katie Nowak in 2002. In the weight throw competition, Miami senior Lauren Collins threw a distance of 63.1/4, breaking last year's record of 62.08 set by Kent State's Swany Donielle. In the pole vault, Akron senior All-American Kira Sims broke the previous record of 13-5 3/4 by clearing the 13-6 barrier, then broke her own new record by jumping to a clearing of 14-0, shattering EMU's Hanna Palamaa 2002 mark.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow morning for the final day of competition. Day two begins at 11:00 a.m.
