CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Bowling Green State University softball team spotted host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a run, then rallied for a 3-1 win over the Islanders Sunday (March 7). The game, BGSU's fourth in the Bash by the Bay, was held at Islander Field.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 2-0 on Sunday, 2-2 in the Bash by the Bay and 5-4 on the season. TAMU-CC drops to 10-16 on the year.
The Islanders scored the game's first run, breaking through against senior Jody Johnson in the first inning. Brenda Guerrero drew a one-out walk, took second on a two-out hit and scored on a Megan Hansen single. Johnson issued another walk to load the bases, but got Christy Cortez to hit a popup back to the circle.
The hosts got a runner as far as third base in the second inning, then loaded the bases with only one out in the third. But, Johnson got a grounder to second for a forceout at home, then struck out Lindsey Maxey to end the threat.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Lindsay Heimrich drew a walk off Dani Damel, and took second on an infield hit by freshman Megan McPherson. Freshman Jeanine Baca's groundout advanced the runners to second and third, and sophomore Gina Rango then clubbed a triple to right-centerfield to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
The Falcons got another run in the sixth, as McPherson led off the inning with her second infield hit of the game. Baca bunted McPherson to second, and junior Kristen Anderson's two-out single brought her home.
Johnson again escaped danger in the bottom of the sixth. For the second time on the day, the Islanders loaded the bases with only one out. After giving up a double, a single and a walk, Johnson got a strikeout of Guerrero, then induced Katie Evans to hit an inning-ending fly ball to right.
In the seventh, Johnson got a pair of ground balls and a popup to clinch the win. She improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing just one run and six hits. Johnson struck out three batters and walked six.
Damel took the loss, allowing two runs and three hits. Sara Pauly, who came on after a BGSU leadoff hit in the fifth, allowed a run and two hits. She struck out five batters and did not walk a batter.
The Falcons had five hits in the game, with McPherson scoring two runs and picking up two hits. Rango, with her triple, had a pair of RBI in the contest.
BGSU is scheduled to close the Bash by the Bay with a third Sunday game, against Stephen F. Austin.
