Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green used a walk-off home run by Nolan Reimold in game one and a great combined pitching effort in game two to take a doubleheader from visiting Cleveland State on Wednesday afternoon, 6-4 and 10-0, at Warren Steller Field. Both games were seven inning affairs.
In game one, sophomore Nolan Reimold blasted a two-run, two-out, game-winning home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Falcons to a 6-4 win. The homer was Reimold's team-leading sixth of the season and his second of the game. He smacked a solo home run to lead off the second inning and finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three runs batted in.
The seventh inning began with the Falcons trailing 4-3. Sophomore Dash Yost led off with a triple to center field and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by senior David Barkholz, knotting the game at 4-4. After Eric Lawson grounded out for the second out of the inning, sophomore Tyler Wasserman reached on an error by the shortstop, setting up Reimold's heroics.
Besides Reimold's three hits, junior Andy Hudak also had multiple hits (2-for-3). Senior Neil Schmitz (3-0) was the fifth Falcon to see time on the mound and picked up the victory, lasting 1.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout.
CSU's Mike Ochwat suffered the loss. CSU outhit the Falcons 11-7 in the game but stranded 10 runners to BGSU's five.
In game two, the Falcons jumped out early and never looked back, plating five runs in the first inning. Junior Jeff Warnock ripped a lead-off triple to right-centerfield and scored off of a Lawson single for a 1-0 lead. After Reimold walked sophomore Steve Raszka singled home Lawson for a 2-0 lead. Josh Dietz then singled to right field and thanks to an error by the right fielder, Reimold and Raszka scored for a 4-0 lead. Dietz advanced all the way to third base on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Lipari for the 5-0 lead after one inning.
BGSU would score one run in the second inning, and two more runs in each the third and fourth innings for the 10-0 verdict. Lipari earned two RBIs in those innings thanks to two bases-loaded walks, while Warnock drove home two runs on two RBI-singles.
On the mound the Falcon pitchers were holding the Vikings in check, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. Freshman Greg Mentrek (3-0) was credited with the win, pitching the opening two innings and not allowing a hit while walking two and striking out a pair. Dan Horvath pitched a hitless 1.1 innings, Ryan Lindquist gave up three hits and no runs in 1.2 innings, Adam Gump didn't allow a hit in one inning, and Matt Hundley pitched a hitless seventh inning.
Warnock finished the second game by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Lipari ended the game with three RBIs on just one official at-bat and not hits. Reimold finished the doubleheader by going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs scored.
BGSU improves to 18-7 overall and 7-1 at Steller Field. The 18 wins are already more than the Falcons notched all of last season (17-28). The Vikings fall to 5-15 overall.
The Falcons are back home this weekend for a big Mid-American Conference series against Northern Illinois (April 16-18). Friday's game starts at 3 p.m. while Saturday's and Sunday's contest are 1 p.m. starts.
