Falcon Hockey Adds Three Players to Recruiting Class

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University hockey coach Scott Paluch announced today the addition of three student-athletes to the Falcons' 2004-05 recruiting class. Defensemen Mike Hodgson (Sioux City-USHL) and Mike Nesdill (Lincoln-USHL), along with Derek Whitmore (Lincoln-USHL) have committed to BGSU. They join forwards Alex Foster (Danville-USHL) and Jonathan Matsumoto (Cumberland-CJHL) who signed national-letters-of-intent in the Fall.
"We are really excited about these three additions to our recruiting class," said Paluch. "With them we have a recruiting class that brings proven scoring and tremendous character to our program."
Mike Hodgson (Defense, shoots right, 5-10, 185, Surfside, Calif.)
A California native, Hodgson is in his second season with the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League. He was named the USHL Defenseman of the Year on Saturday, April 17. He helped anchor a Sioux City squad that allowed the second-fewest goals in the league and made mighty contributions on the offensive side of the ice, leading the league in points by a defenseman with 42 points (9g, 33a) in 58 games played. This season he notched five PPGs, one SHG, and two game-winners. In two USHL seasons, Hodgson posted nearly 60 points and a plus/minus rating of plus-30. In 2002-03, Hodgson played in 48 games with 17 points (4g, 13a) and a plus-12 rating for the Musketeers. Sioux City is currently in the final four of the USHL Playoffs.

Mike Nesdill (Defense, shoots right, 6-2, 183, Phoenix, Ariz.)
Nesdill recently completed his second season with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. In 2003-04, Nesdill played in 50 games and tallied 22 points (7g, 15a). He had a minus-four rating and accumulated 88 PIM with five PPGs and one GWG. In 2002-03 with the Stars, Nesdill accumulated 21 points (9g, 12a) in 56 games. He tallied 94 PIM with a plus-six rating. He was a teammate of future Falcon Derek Whitmore while with the Stars this season.

Derek Whitmore (Forward, shoots left, 5-11, 185, Rochester, N.Y.)
Whitmore recently completed his first season with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. In 2003-04, Whitmore was second among the Stars in scoring with 42 points (19g, 23a) in 45 games. He had a plus-four rating with six PPGs and three GWGs. In 2002-03, he played for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL and tallied 28 points (15g, 13a) in 58 games, as well as 51 PIM. He finished plus-three that year with one PPG and two GWGs. He was a teammate of future Falcon Mike Nesdill while with the Stars this season.

Updates on Foster and Matsumoto...
Alex Foster (Forward, shoots left, 6-1, 190, Canton, Mich.)
Foster is currently in his second season with the Danville Wings (Danville, Ill.) of the USHL. He is tied for 14th in the USHL in scoring with 23-30--53 in 55 games with 91 PIM. Foster has 10 PPGs and two SHGs while accumulating a plus-four rating. Danville is currently in the final four of the USHL Playoffs. In 2002-03, Foster registered 9-18--27 with 38 PIM in 43 games for the Wings.

Jonathan Matsumoto (Forward, shoots left, 6-0, 184, Orleans, Ontario)
Matsumoto recently finished his first year with the Cumberland Grads of the Central Junior A Hockey League, which is based out of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He finished the year with 31-32--63 in 51 games with 26 PIM. Matsumoto led all rookies in the CJHL in scoring with the next closest rookie 15 points behind him. The Grads finished second in the CJHL Regular Season with their 35-14-5 record (76 points). Two years ago, Matsumoto was invited to try out for the2002 Team Ontario Under-17 training camp.
