CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University senior Jenifer Kernahan has been named the Mid-American Conference's Player of the Week. The announcement was made on Monday afternoon (May 10) by the conference office.
Kernahan earns the honor for the second time in her career, having also been named the MAC Player of the Week on April 14, 2003.
Kernahan, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio (Perrysburg HS), hit a team-high .571 last weekend in the Falcons' three-game series vs. MAC West Division champion Central Michigan. Kernahan also led the Falcons in total bases (6), slugging pct. (.857) and on-base pct. (.667), as the Falcons picked up a win and clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament.
The Falcon shortstop had a hit in the first game vs. CMU on Saturday (May 8), then went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, belting a pair of doubles, to cap a 4-for-5 day at the plate. In the second game, her second double came in the sixth inning of a tie game, and led to the winning run.
Kernahan has hit .471 over her last seven games, and is batting .432 over the last 14 contests. During that 14-game stretch, she has raised her batting average nearly 70 points.
On the season, Kernahan is hitting .246, good for fourth on the team. She finished with a .290 average in MAC games, finishing second on the Falcons with an on-base percentage of .403 in league play.
Kernahan earned the P-O-W honor for the MAC's West Division. Ohio's Erin Chapman and Buffalo's Stacey Evans earned Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, respectively, in the East Division, while CMU's Amber Puchalski took West Division pitching honors.
The Falcons are 29-27 on the season, and BGSU finished the regular season with a league record of 13-11. The Falcons will open play in the MAC Tournament on Thursday morning (May 13), taking on Western Michigan in an 11:00 a.m. start at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. WMU is the third seed for the six-team, double-elimination tournament, while BG is the sixth seed.
