BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Abby Habicht is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Habicht, a sophomore on the BGSU softball team, had several key hits in the Falcons' run to the MAC Tournament championship.
Habicht, a native of Edwardsburg, Mich. (Edwardsburg H.S.), hit a two-out double off MAC Pitcher of the Year Amber Puchalski to plate a Falcon teammate with the game's first run in a 3-0 league tournament win over regular-season champion Central Michigan.
Two days later, Habicht hit a two-out homerun in the sixth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie with what would prove to be the winning run of the MAC Tournament's championship game, a 4-3 victory over Miami. The homer was Habicht's first collegiate round-tripper.
The Falcons' starting catcher, Habicht also guided the BGSU pitching staff to three shutouts among the team's five tourney wins. BG, the sixth seed for the six-team tournament, eliminated the first, second, third and fourth seeds in order en route to the title.
Habicht, an integrated social studies major, maintained a 3.30 cumulative grade point average entering the spring semester.
