Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green used a seven-run sixth inning to defeat visiting Miami for the second-straight day at Warren Steller Field, 8-5. The Falcons used four Redhawk errors along with a three-run blast by David Barkholz to break open the 3-1 contest.
Back-to-back singles by Josh Stewart and Nolan Reimold began the inning for BGSU before a fielder's choice by Jimmy Lipari got Stewart out at third base on a close call. Barkholz made the home fans happy, though, when he followed with a three-run home run over the right field wall, his second of the season, to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead.
BGSU built upon that with a Josh Dietz double and a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Tyler Wasserman to reach safely. An infield hit by Mike Barnard loaded the bases for Eric Lawson. The freshman hit a roller to the Miami second baseman who overthrew first base, allowing Dietz and Wasserman to score. However, the Miami first baseman then overthrew the catcher at home plate to allow both Barnard and Lawson to score, clearing the bases and giving BGSU a comfortable 8-3 advantage. The Falcons ended the inning with seven hits while Miami recorded four errors in the frame.
Miami had built a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a three-run shot by Sam Sellery off of BGSU starter Burke Badenhop. BGSU cut into the lead with a run in the fourth inning off of a Lipari RBI-single to center field, scoring Stewart from second base. That set up the chaotic sixth inning for BGSU.
The Redhawks plated a run in the seventh and ninth innings but could only cut it to 8-5 before Tyler Johnson entered in the ninth inning and picked up his first save of the season by striking out Brendan Hadley for the final out with two runners on base.
Badenhop (3-2) earned the win, lasting 6.1 innings with eight hits, four runs allowed on three walks and four strikeouts. Neil Schmitz pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing four hits and one run on two walks. Miami's Graham Taylor (4-5) suffered the loss.
BGSU collected 11 hits to Miami's 12 for the game. Lawson, Dietz and Barnard each had a pair of base hits for the Falcons.
BGSU improves to 25-13 overall and 10-7 in the Mid-American Conference while Miami drops to 27-16 overall and 9-6 in the league.
The two teams end their three-game series on Sunday, May 9, at Warren Steller Field at 1 p.m.
