Bowling Green State University's D'Arcy McConvey has been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's At-Large University Division Third Team. McConvey is the third BGSU student-athlete this year to be named an academic all-America and the seventh Falcon hockey player ever to earn such an honor. Craig Jarrett (football/second-team) and Stefanie Wenzel (women's basketball/first-team) were named Academic All-Americas this year.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, Division II, Division III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
McConvey, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, completed his four-year career with the Falcon Hockey team this past spring. He held a 3.91 grade-point-average while majoring in financial economics and was a two-time CCHA All-Academic First-Team member. The forward was named BGSU's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2004 and was a 2003 Verizon Academic All-District IV Third Team member. McConvey was a candidate for a Canadian Rhodes Post-Graduate Scholarship. He also was a member of the BGSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and represented BGSU at the 2003 NCAA Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. He served as team captain the past two seasons and led the team in scoring each of the last two years, while recording his 100th career point this season. McConvey finished his career by playing in 153-consecutive games.
