BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team is preparing for the 2004 season, the eighth campaign in program history. Members of the Falcon squad reported Wednesday (Aug. 11), and practice began on Thursday (Aug. 12).
Head coach Andy Richards begins his fifth season at the helm of the Falcons, and welcomes back a total of 19 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from last year's team. The 2003 BGSU squad finished 8-12-3 overall, placing eighth in the Mid-American Conference regular-season standings with a 5-5-2 league slate.
When conference tournament time rolled around, however, the Brown and Orange became the lowest seed to win a MAC Tournament match, and BG advanced all the way to the tourney's championship contest.
The returning Falcons combined to provide nearly 96 percent of the team's scoring last fall. At the other end of the field, the Falcons return all but one defender, and the returning goalkeepers combined to play 99.5% of the minutes between the posts in '03.
Richards and the Falcons will begin the 2004 season with three consecutive home matches, including a pair in the Falcon Classic on Aug. 27 and 29. BG will meet Duquesne and Pittsburgh in that tourney, then will host Michigan State the following weekend (Sept. 3).
