The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will look for their first road MAC win this weekend as they travel to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami (Oct. 1) and then travel to Muncie, Indiana, for a showdown with the Cardinals of Ball State (Oct. 2) the following night. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
BGSU CONTINUES HOT STRETCH
After starting the 2004 season 0-3 with loses to #4 Florida, Northwestern and IPFW, the BGSU Falcons have now won nine of their last ten matches for Sit at 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the MAC
2-0 CONFERENCE START IS RARE
With back-to-back four game wins over Toledo and Northern Illinois this past weekend, the volleyball team began conference play 2-0 for only the eighth time in 28 years of the program. The last time they started 2-0 was in 1998.
RECAP OF PAST WEEKEND
BGSU used a balanced attack in both matches over the weekend to improve to 9-4 and 2-0 in conference play. On Friday night vs. Toledo, six Falcons recorded at least five kills and were led by freshman Maggie Karges with 18 kills, followed by Emily Manser (12) and Taylor Twite (10).
The following night vs. Northern Illinois, five Falcons nearly recorded double figures in kills. Manser and Melissa Mohr led the onslaught with 15 kills, with Stephanie Swiger (12), Twite (12) and Karges (9) each chipping in.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
The Miami Redhawks (2-9) are coming of two MAC losses to open MAC play. MU fell to Ohio (3-1) and Marshall (3-2) over the weekend. Both matches were on the road. Miami owns a 33-18 advantage over the Falcons, despite a four game win by BGSU last season.
Ball State enters the week at 7-6, after falling in three games to Ohio, but downing Toledo in five games in Savage Hall. The Cardinals, much like the Redhawks own a comanding series lead over the Brown and Orange. BSU leads the all-time series 33-10-1, including a three game sweep of the Falcons last season.
VAN DE WALLE AND TEAM USA CAPTURE BRONZE
The USA National Sitting Volleyball team came away with the bronze medal last weekend with a four game victory over Slovenia (25-20, 10-25, 25-18, 25-20) on the final day of competition at the 2004 Paralympic Games. With the conclusion of the Games, head coach Denise Van De Walle will return to the states, prior to the Oct. 1 match with Miami.
Emily Manser EARNS MAC WEST POW
Bowling Green State University volleyball player Emily Manser has been named this week's MAC West Division Player of the Week after leading the Falcons to a 2-0 start in league play, the program's first 2-0 start since 1998.
Manser and the Falcons posted wins over Toledo and Northern Illinois this past weekend. The junior had 12 kills, 17 digs and three aces in a win over the Rockets, snapping UT's 10-match win streak. She then added 15 kills, 16 digs and four blocks in a win over the Huskies. For the week, Manser averaged 3.38 kills, 4.12 digs and 4.00 points per game while hitting .350.
Manser joins senior Melissa Mohr as Falcons to earn a player of the week nomination after Mohr captured the award back on Sept. 13.
