Newson Named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green State University defensive back Keon Newson was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week after he forced and recovered a fumble and also returned an interception 28 yards for a TD against Oklahoma. In addition, he had 10 tackles and a pass deflection. It is the third time in his career that he has received the honor. MAC Football Players of the Week Games of Sept. 2 and 4 West Division Offense - Anthony Sherrell, Eastern Michigan, running back (Sr., Roseville, Mich.) Led the Eagles to a 37-34 win over Buffalo with 151 rushing yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Sherrell had a career-long run of 66 yards and he had his ninth consecutive game with 100-plus rushing yards. Defense - Keon Newson, Bowling Green, strong safety (Sr., Decatur, Ga.) Newson returned an interception of Heisman Trophy Award winner Jason White 28 yards for a touchdown and also caused a fumble that led to another Falcon touchdown in a 40-24 loss at No. 2 Oklahoma. Newson was credited with 10 tackles and one pass break up. Special Teams - Andrew Wellock, Eastern Michigan, placekicker (So., North Canton, Ohio) Wellock was 3-of-3 on field goal attempts, successful from 28, 37 and 49 yards, in a 37-34 win over Buffalo. Wellock's 49-yarder was a career long and he also handled the punting and kickoff duties. East Division Offense - Charlie Frye, Akron, quarterback (Sr., Willard, Ohio) Frye established a school record by completing 81% of his pass attempts in a 48-10 loss at Penn State. Frye connected on his first seven attempts and ended the day with 29 completions on 36 throws for 223 yards. Frye hooked up with two different receivers eight times, both of whom were making their debut at wide receiver. Frye became seventh quarterback in MAC history to complete 700 passes, boosting his total to 722. co-Defense - Aaron Sanders, Buffalo, defensive end (Jr., Clarence, N.Y.) Sanders caused a fumble, recovered a fumble and had a sack among his seven tackles in a 37-34 loss at Eastern Michigan. His caused fumble in the second quarter was returned by teammate Phil Jacques for a touchdown that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. His third quarter recovery led to UB's go ahead touchdown at 34-30. co-Defense - Jack Williams, Kent State, defensive back (Fr., Norfolk, Va.) Williams had a school-record 99 yard interception return for a touchdown at Iowa for the Golden Flashes only score in their 39-7 loss. Williams was also credited with three tackles in his first career action. His 99 yard return was one yard shy of tying a MAC record. Special Teams - Ian O'Connor, Marshall, placekicker (So., Knoxville, Tenn.) O'Connor debuted with a 3-of-3 performance on field goal attempts, connecting from 32, 30 and 20 yards out in a 17-15 loss to Troy. O'Connor also handled kickoff duties, booming two into the endzone for touchbacks, and punting chores, averaging 35.7 yards on six kicks. As well, he was credited with one tackle. Also nominated - West Division Offense - Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green, quarterback (in his first career start, completed 24-of-41 attempts for 218 yards and two touchdowns at No. 2 Oklahoma); Lance Moore, Toledo, wide receiver (10 receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown at Minnesota). Defense - Kevin Harrison, Eastern Michigan, linebacker (18 tackles, with eight solos versus Buffalo); Ray Smith, Northern Illinois, strong safety (17 tackles, 13 solos and two caused fumbles at Maryland); Paul Tithof, Western Michigan, linebacker (registered a team-high 11 tackles, including two for losses, and forced a fumble in WMU's 42-0 shutout of Tennessee-Martin). Special Teams - Reggie Hodges, Ball State, punter (averaged 44.0 yards on 10 kicks versus Boston College after sitting out the 2003 season. Had seven punts inside the 20); Shaun Suisham, Bowling Green, placekicker (had a career-long 47-yard field goal, three PATs and three touchbacks on kickoffs at Oklahoma); Brett Kern, Toledo, punter (a freshman who averaged 43.0 yards on eight kicks at Minnesota); Greg Jennings, Western Michigan, wide receiver (recorded a 53-yard punt return for touchdown in WMU's season-opening win over Tennessee-Martin). Also nominated - East Division Offense - Dave Dawson, Buffalo, tailback (102 yards on 10 carries at Eastern Michigan); Antwan Smith, Kent State, quarterback (18-32, 114 yards at Iowa); Josh Davis, Marshall, wide receiver (six receptions for 79 yards and one TD versus Troy); Kalvin McRae, Ohio, running back (100 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries versus VMI in his first collegiate game). Defense - Dionte Wilson, Marshall, linebacker (nine tackles, three solos versus Troy); Matt Pusateri, Miami, safety (nine tackles, six solos and an interception at Michigan); Matt Muncy, Ohio, linebacker (six tackles, 1.5 sacks, a caused fumble versus VMI). Special Teams - Ben Woods, Buffalo, punter (averaged 47.5 yards on four kicks in his collegiate debut); Josh Brazen, Kent State, punter (had six punts for a 46.5 average at Iowa); Ryne Robinson, Miami, punt return (four returns for 139 yards, including a long of 70 yards to the UM one-yard line); Matthew Miller, Ohio, punter (three punts for an average of 44.3 at VMI).
