Falcons Kick off 2005 With Home Series vs. Alaska Fairbanks (Jan. 7-8)
Bowling Green returns to the BGSU Ice Arena and Central Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend when it hosts its league foes from the great white north, Alaska Fairbanks, for a two-game series, Jan. 7-8. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. faceoffs and can be heard on 88.1 FM with play-by-play from Andy Evans.
Falcons Face Alaska Fairbanks
BGSU leads the all-time series 14-12-4 and are 7-5-2 at home against the Nanooks. BGSU snapped a seven-game winless streak against UAF last year in Fairbanks with a 6-2 win on Jan. 23. BGSU is 2-5-3 in the last 10 matchups. Against the Nanooks, SR Steve Brudzewski has 5-1--6 in six career games, JR Brett Pilkington has 2-1--3 in four career games, SO Rich Meloche has 0-2--2 in two career games, SO James Unger has 1-1--2 in two career games, SR Alex Rogosheske has 1-1--2 in four career games, and SR Ryan Minnabarriet has 1-1--2 in five career games. SR Jordan Sigalet has a 3.20 gaa. and .928 save pct. in four career games.
Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks
UAF finished 0-3-1 in four games in December with its last victory coming Nov. 27 at home vs. Notre Dame (3-2). JR F Kelly Czuy leads the Nanooks in assists, points, and penalty minutes with 6-10--16 and 47 PIM. FR Wylie Rogers is third among CCHA goalies with a 2.30 gaa. and has a .921 save pct. in 626:56 minutes of action. UAF is coached by first-year head coach Tavis MacMillan (UAF `95).
Matsumoto Back in Scoring Column
FR Jonathan Matsumoto snapped a six-game goaless drought dating back to Nov. 20 vs. Wayne State with his eighth goal of the year at Dartmouth on Dec. 29. Matsumoto leads the Falcons with eight goals, six PPGs, and 13 points. The Orleans, Ontario, native is second in the CCHA and T-11th nationally with his six PPGs.
Serve Up the Shots
The 39 shots by the Falcons vs. Dartmouth on Dec. 29 were the most since Feb. 28, 2004, when BGSU had 43 attempts vs. NMU in a 2-2 tie. The next night the Falcons recorded 37 shots vs. Providence and are now 3-2-1 in games with 30-plus shots.
Shootout For the Falcons at Ledyard Classic
Dartmouth advanced past BGSU to the championship of the Ledyard Classic on Dec. 29 with a 4-3 advantage in a shootout after the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie. The last shootout that BGSU was involved in came on Oct. 13, 2001, in the Ice Breaker Tournament at Maine. BGSU ended in a 1-1 tie vs. Clarkson and won a shootout against the Knights.
Morrison Among Nation's Best Defensemen
JR Don Morrison's has 11 points (2g, 9a) in 14 games this season, equalling his point total from all of last year in 38 games. He has six points (1g, 5a) in his last nine games. Morrison's 11 points are 13th best among defensemen nationally and T-6th best in the CCHA. He also leads Falcon defensemen with a plus-3 rating.
