BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With the Mid-American Conference race more than halfway complete, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team is tied for third place in the conference standings ... believe it or not, the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (8-6-0, 4-2-0 MAC) will conclude the home portion of the regular-season schedule this weekend ... BGSU will complete a four-match homestand with a pair of contests at Cochrane Field, taking on Kent State University in Friday (Oct. 14) action and the University at Buffalo on Sunday (Oct. 16) ... Friday's match vs. KSU will begin at 3:00 p.m. ... Sunday's UB match, slated to kick off at 1:00 p.m., also will mark 'Senior Day' at Cochrane Field, with the nine seniors on the BGSU roster recognized prior to the match.
LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons posted a pair of home shutout wins last weekend, over Ohio and Akron ... on Friday (Oct. 7), the Brown and Orange made history (see below) with a 2-0 win over the Bobcats ... freshman Corbie Yee and senior Julie Trundle scored the goals, while senior Ali Shingler made three saves in net ... two days later (Oct. 9), senior co-captain Ashley Wentzel's header off a corner kick by junior Lindsay Carter, midway through the first half, lifted BG to a 1-0 win over UA ... Shingler made five stops in that match.
PLAYING THE DEFENDING CO-CHAMPIONS, AGAIN
For the second consecutive Friday, BGSU will host a defending MAC co-champion ... last weekend, the Falcons posted a win over Ohio ... this Friday, the Brown and Orange will meet Kent State ... KSU, after tying with Esatern Michigan for the 2003 regular-season championship, tied Ohio for the regular-season crown in 2004 ... the Falcons, of course, finished eighth in last year's regular-season standings, but won the MAC Tournament title ... Kent State was the preseason choice of the league's coaches to win both the 2005 regular-season and tournament titles.
SENIOR PRIDE
Sunday's match vs. Buffalo will mark the final regular-season home contest for the Falcons' senior class ... the 2005 Falcons have nine seniors, the most in school history ... that group includes Britt Anderson, Molly Bremen, Leah Eggleton, Samantha Meister, Megan Rapp, Natalie Sampiller, Ali Shingler, Julie Trundle and Ashley Wentzel.
THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
The Falcons' win over Ohio on Friday (Oct. 7) was BGSU's first victory over the Bobcats in the history of the program ... since 1996, the first year for varsity women's soccer at both schools, Ohio had held a 7-0-1 series advantage entering the 2005 season ... in the eight previous meetings, the Falcons had scored a total of just one goal, before finding the back of the net twice on Friday.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Falcons have won the last four home matches, tying the school record ... BGSU also won four consecutive matches at Cochrane Field from Aug. 27-Sept. 15, 1999.
HEAD COACH Andy Richards
Andy Richards is in his sixth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons ... he picked up his 50th career win on Sept. 11, and now has an overall record of 55-58-10, including a MAC Tournament mark of 7-3-1 ... Richards has led BGSU to the four finest seasons in school history over his first five years ... he has guided the Falcons to the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament on four occasions, to the championship match three times, and, in 2004, to the first league tourney title and NCAA Tournament berth in school history ... Eric Golz is in his second season with the program, and his first as the top assistant.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-6-0 and a MAC ledger of 4-2-0 ... last weekend, the Falcons won a pair of home matches, and BGSU is riding a season-high three-match win streak ... after a 3-1 win at Miami (Oct. 2), the Brown and Orange returned to Cochrane Field for last weekend's wins over Ohio (2-0, Oct. 7) and Akron (1-0, Oct. 9) ... senior Samantha Meister has a team-high 14 points, while classmate Britt Anderson is right behind with 13 ... Meister and Anderson each have five goals to share the team lead in that category ... another senior, Julie Trundle, has a pair of goals, a team- and MAC-best seven assists and 11 points, while freshman Corbie Yee has four goals and eight points ... another freshman, Kristin McDonald, has four points, as do seniors Leah Eggleton and Ashley Wentzel ... senior Ali Shingler has started all 14 matches this season, and has 70 saves and a 1.63 goals-against average ... BG returned 15 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last year's MAC Tournament championship team ... the group of returnees includes no fewer than nine seniors, the most in school history ... the senior class is looking to become the first class in school history to qualify for the MAC Tournament in four consecutive seasons ... Shingler, the lone returning 'keeper, played nearly 84 percent of the minutes in 2004.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Kent State enters the BGSU match with an overall record of 6-6-2, and the Golden Flashes are 3-2-1 in MAC play ... after winning just once in four matches to start league play, KSU picked up a pair of 1-0 home wins last weekend, downing Northern Illinois (Oct. 7) and Western Michigan (Oct. 9), with the latter match handing WMU its first conference setback ... the Flashes are 2-1-1 in road matches this season to date ... individually, sophomore Kimberly Dimitroff and redshirt freshman Catharine Marosszeky are tied for the team lead with 10 points apiece ... Dimitroff, Marosszeky and senior Ashley Bohinc all have four goals to date ... freshman Kristen Nelson and junior Alicia Fernandez have shared time in goal this season, with each player earning one complete-match shutout last weekend ... Nelson is 3-2-2 with a 1.01 goals-against average and 39 saves ... Fernandez is 3-4 with 26 stops and a GAA of 1.72 ... the Flashes went 11-4-5 overall last fall, tying for the MAC regular-season title with a 7-2-3 league record ... head coach Rob Marinaro welcomed back a whopping 15 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from that team ... Marinaro has a record of 41-36-12 in his fifth year as a collegiate head coach, all in Kent.
Buffalo enters the weekend with an overall mark of 4-8-1, and the Bulls are 2-4-0 in MAC play to date ... UB will play a Friday (Oct. 14) contest at Toledo before heading to BG on Sunday ... the Bulls snapped a three-match losing streak with Sunday's (Oct. 9) 3-2 double-overtime victory over NIU ... Buffalo is 2-4-0 in road matches heading into the weekend ... senior Natalie Crofut has team-best totals of three goals and eight points, while sophomore Kathleen Fage has two goals and six points ... freshman Brooke McCalla and soph Ashley Turner have scored five points apiece ... in net, senior Anna-Lesa Calvert has played every minute, and has a league-high 76 saves and a GAA of 1.63 ... a total of 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, returned from last year's 7-11-1 team ... that squad finished 5-6-1 in MAC play ... head coach Jean-A. Tassy is 97-84-19 in his 11th season with the Bulls ... he has a mark of 218-171-33 in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach.
The Falcons lead Kent State, 5-3-2, in the all-time series between the teams ... BGSU has a record of 2-1-2 in home matches with the Golden Flashes ... last season, the teams split a pair of matches in Kent ... the Flashes captured the regular-season meeting, 4-2 on Oct. 15, but BG posted an upset of top-seeded KSU, 2-1 in double OT, in the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round ... THE FALCONS AND THE MAC RACE
With each team having played six of the 11 matches on the MAC regular-season schedule, BGSU is tied for third place ... the Falcons and Ball State each have 12 points on 4-2-0 MAC records, although the Cardinals would win a tiebreaker due to a win in the teams' head-to-head meeting ... Central Michigan (5-0-1 MAC) is in first place with 16 points, while Western Michigan (5-1-0 MAC) has 15 points after falling from the ranks of the unbeaten on Sunday ... WMU fell by a 1-0 score to BGSU's next opponent, Kent State ... CMU and WMU will square off in Kalamazoo on Sunday (Oct. 16).
LEADERS OF THE MAC
Falcon players are at or near the top of a number of MAC lists ... senior Julie Trundle leads the league in both assists (seven) and assists per match (0.50) ... senior Samantha Meister is second in the MAC in points (14), while classmate Britt Anderson is third (13) ... Trundle is tied for seventh in the league in that category (11) ... Anderson is second in points per game (1.08), with Meister tied for fourth (1.00) and Trundle eighth (0.79) ... Anderson and Meister are tied for fourth in goals (five), with freshman Corbie Yee deadlocked for eighth (four) ... Meister is deadlocked for fourth in the MAC with four assists ... Anderson and Yee each have two match-winning goals to tie for third in the conference ... at the other end of the field, senior goalkeeper Ali Shingler is third in the MAC in saves (70), fourth in saves per match (5.00) and tied for fourth in shutouts (three) ... in MAC matches only, Trundle leads the league in assists (four) and assists per match (0.67), while Yee is tied for first in match-winning goals (two).
