Emily Manser Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green's Emily Manser (volleyball) and Ball State's Joey Lynch (football) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week for the week of October 12, 2005.
Manser (left-side hitter, Sr., 4.00, communication disorders, Westerville, Ohio) hit .292 as the Falcons swept a pair of road matches, beating Akron and Buffalo. She had 18 kills, 13 digs and two blocks as the Brown and Orange beat the Zips in four games. Manser then, hit .500, with 11 kills and one error in 20 attempts in a three-game sweep of the Bulls. She also had 16 digs in that game. On the season, Manser has 2.43 kills and 3.33 digs per game. The Falcons are 3-3 in the MAC, and are now 10-8 overall after Wednesday's sweep of IPFW.
Lynch (QB, Sr. 3.11, social studies teaching, Muncie, Ind.) helped Ball State to its first victory of the season with a record-settiing five overtime 60-57 victory over Western Michigan Saturday. He completed 23-of-40 passes for 306 yards with four touchdowns in Ball State's first league win of the year. Lynch became only the third quarterback in Ball State history to throw for over 300 yards in a game twice in a career. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Ball State: Angie Parrell (volleyball, setter, So., 3.77, secondary education in life science and physics, Black Earth, Wis.) posted a 13.00 assist-per-game average to guide the Cardinals to a 1-1 record last week. Parrell, who entered the week with a 10.73 apg average, recorded 41 assists at Ohio and 37 at Kent State to raise her average to 10.97. She also quarterbacked the club to a .276 (101-33-.276) hitting percentage for the two matches. In addition, she proved to be a threat at the net by averaging 2.00 kills per game and 1.00 blocks per game, while scoring a 1.33 digs-per-game average on defense. Parrell is nine assists shy of becoming just the 10th player in school history to reach 1,000 in a career. In two seasons with the Cardinals, she has collected 991 kills to rank 10th on BSU's career charts.
Buffalo: Katie Fage (soccer, midfielder, So., 3.654, undecided, Delmar, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in UB's 3-2 double overtime victory over Northern Illinois on Sunday, breaking UB's three-match losing streak. Fage netted the winner in the second minute of the second extra session after freshman Brooke McCalla drew a foul. Fage then drilled the direct kick into the corner of the net to end the game. Fage also tallied an assist in the contest.
Central Michigan: Anne Decker (soccer, goalkeeper, Jr., 3.44, physical education, Troy, Mich.) recorded a pair of shutouts as CMU defeated Ball State, in overtime, and Miami over the weekend, both by a score of 1-0, to keep CMU unbeaten in the conference and help them move past Western Michigan into first place in the conference standings. Against Ball State, Decker made an outstanding save on a shot from pont-blank range to keep the Cardinals from winning the game in overtime. In the win over Miami, she stopped two shots from close range in the final minutes to preserve CMU's 1-0 win. The shutouts were the 16th and 17th of Decker's career and moved her into seventh place on the all-time list for shutouts in Mid-American Conference history.
Eastern Michigan: Becky Baltare (volleyball, OH, Sr., 3.66, elementary education, Charing Cross, Ontario) led Eastern Michigan to two MAC victories this week, over Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. In the four-game victory over Western Michigan, Baltare recorded 18 kills, 18 digs, and scored 19 points. This all-around performance also included two set assists and two block assists. In the three-game sweep against NIU, Baltare had 14 kills, 11 digs, and scored 16.5 points. In addition, Baltare added a set assist, one block, and one block assist. This outstanding all-around performance has catapulted Eastern Michigan to the top of the MAC-West Division standings.
Miami: Keri von Kalinowski (field hockey, Sr., 3.14, exercise science, San Diego, Calif.) scored the game-tying goal with less than six minutes left to send Miami's game with No. 9 Ohio into overtime. She also assisted on a goal in Miami's 2-0 win over Missouri State on Sunday.
Northern Illinois: Kate McCullagh (volleyball, middle blocker, Jr., 3.07, physical education, Woodstock, Ill.) totaled 35 kills in two matches over the weekend to help NIU finish with a record of 1-1. Her most impressive performance came in a five-game win over Central Michigan on Friday night. McCullagh, who is the NCAA leader in kills per game, tops NIU with 431 kills and 84 total blocks. In Mid-American Conference action, McCullagh is averaging 20.5 kills and 7.3 digs per match.
Ohio: Melissa Griffin (volleyball, middle blocker, So., 3.81, hearing/speech and language sciences, Whitehall, Mich.) totaled 24 kills for a 4.00 kills per game average. She posted eight blocks for a 1.25 blocks per game average. Griffin committed only two hitting errors in hitting .431 over two matches. She tallied six digs and three aces. Griffin led the team to a 2-0 weekend with wins over Ball State and Toledo.
Toledo: Kelly Langenbeck (volleyball, forward, Sr., 3.481, exercise science, Akron, Ohio) scored a pair of goals to lead Toledo to a 3-2 victory over Ohio on Sunday. The win allowed the Rockets to post a pair of victories on the weekend and end the Rockets' four-game losing streak against Ohio.
Male Nominees:
Akron: Jason Swiger (football, place-kicker, Sr., 3.66, biology, Copley, Ohio) kept etching his name in the UA record book with a pair of fourth-quarter field goals, including the game-winner, in Saturday's 13-7 road win over Buffalo. The senior place-kicker moved into a tie for fifth place on the UA career field goals list with 31. On the day, Swiger was 2-for-4 in field goal attempts and hit his only extra-point try. He missed on tries of 41 and 45 yards into a 25-mile-per-hour wind, but also had a perfectly-placed pooch kickoff which was mishandled into a fumble. Swiger, who plans to attend medical school, ranks fourth (185 points) on the UA career kick-scoring list and seventh on the overall scoring list.
Bowling Green: Jamien Johnson (football, linebacker, Sr., 3.00, marketing, Fort Washington, Md.) tied for team honors with nine tackles in the Falcons' 38-14 win over Ohio. The BG defense held the Bobcats to just 68 yards rushing and 239 yards of total offense. Johnson had one solo and eight assisted tackles in the win. He had 0.5 tackles for loss and broke up one pass. On the season, Johnson is fourth on the team with a total of 30 tackles. BGSU is 3-2 overall and leads the MAC East with a 2-0 league record.
Buffalo: Dan McKenna (cross country, Jr., 3.066, media studies, Liverpool, N.Y.) won the individual title at the UB Open finishing the 8K course in 25:59.9 and leading the Bulls to the overall team title. McKenna finished 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher to earn his second individual title of the season. He also finished first at the Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron on Sept. 10.
Ohio: Matt Miller (football, punter, Sr, 3.31, marketing, Westerville, Ohio) was a key factor in helping hold Bowling Green to their second-lowest scoring output of the season by aiding in the field position game with punt placement. He averaged 37.7 yards per punt on nine attempts with a long of 48 yards. Miller sent four punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line and one inside the five.
Toledo: Trinity Dawson (football, running back, Sr., 3.131, finance, Tulsa, Okla.) rushed for a season-high 159 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown to help Toledo defeat Eastern Michigan 30-3 on Saturday night. With the win, the Rockets (4-1, 2-0 MAC) moved into sole possession of first place in the MAC's West Division. Dawson's touchdown came on UT's first drive of the game and gave the Rockets a lead it would not relinquish. Dawson moved into fourth place on UT's all-time rushing list with 2,635 yards in the ninth 100-yard game of his career and first of the season. He also was six yards shy of his career total of 165 yards versus Central Michigan in 2003.
Western Michigan: Nick Varcadipane (football, So., 3.00, undecided, Totowa, N.J.) recorded nine tackles; including four solo, one tackle for loss and one sack, in the Broncos' 60-57 five overtime loss to Ball State.
