BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Despite out-shooting Merrimack College 45-23, two third period Warrior goals downed the Bowling Green State University hockey team 3-2, to open the 2005-06 season Friday night inside the Ice Arena.
"It was a tough loss, but I thought we did a lot of thing necessary to win the hockey game," said head coach Scott Paluch. "We created a lot of changes, but I thought their goaltender was outstanding."
Senior captain Don Morrison opened the scoring for the Falcons at the 5:54 mark of the first period placing a laser just over the left shoulder of goaltender Jim Healey to spot the Falcons an early 1-0 lead. Ryan Barnett and Bryan Dobek assisted on the goal.
"I thought we were playing pretty well and we had chances, we needed to finish off plays and extend that lead," said Paluch.
Forward Justin Mills knotted the score at 1-1 at the 10:43 mark.
In the opening period BGSU out-shot Merrimack 18-5, and 45-23 for the entire contest.
Kevin Schmidt recorded his first collegiate goal of his career (assisted by Jonathan Matsumoto and Alex Foster) to help the Falcons regain the lead at 2-1, midway through the second period, but the Orange and Brown were unable to make the lead stand up.
Goals by Matt Johnson (12:04) and Hank Cariso (17:15) gave the Warriors the victory, 3-2, despite several chances for BGSU to retie the score late in the third period.
For the night senior goaltender Jon Horrell stopped 20 of 23 shots, and helped the Falcons shutout the Warrior power play, 0-for-6. BGSU was 2-for-13 on the power play.
The Falcons will not have long to think about the loss, as they host Boston College tomorrow night (Oct. 15) inside the Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.
