Head Coach Gregg Brandon
On adjustments after Omar got hurt and WMU scoring on the same play...
"Things were happening pretty fast. That's football. Guys get hurt... Marques Parks broke his ankle; he's done and will have surgery in the morning. That's really sad and I feel really bad for that kid. And I definitely feel bad for Omar. But Omar will be back. Omar just has a shoulder. I don't know if he will play next week but Anthony Turner has to step up. It's his time, he's got to do the job, and he is more than capable. He did some nice things in the second half tonight, I thought. We have struggled defensively all year stopping the run. That is our Achilles Heal right now. We can't get off the field and that is really disappointing...We need to assess that, whether it is a scheme problem, which I don't think it is, if it's that we don't have the right guys in there...I have some experienced players on that side of the ball and we have struggled to stop the run at key times this year."
On how the offensive game plan changes with Anthony Turner at quarterback...
"Not much...we ran him a little bit more than Omar...Anthony is more in the Josh Harris mode, so that is probably, down the road, what we will be doing with him. We need to get him some throws that he can complete...and we will."
"Anthony is a competitor and we have to put him in situations where he can use his abilities, which we will. And if Anthony starts next week you will see a guy that is ready to go, no question."
Disappointed on lack of execution or effort?
"That's a good question. I think it was a combination of things. We didn't execute defensively on their offense, and that is disappointing because they have a freshman quarterback and a young team, so for us to not step up and stop them, that is disappointing."
On getting back on track for Akron...
"We have to get back on track. It is a home game, we still have control of our destiny, if we can get it together and beat Akron, we are still in good shape. Last time I checked, we are still in first place in the East. We still have to understand that we can still be where we want to be in December, but we have to step up on both sides of the ball."
Ted Piepkow
Can you tell us about their quarterback?
"It's hard getting them into third down, and that quarterback draw killed us. They tried to eat up the clock in the second half, and we had opportunities to make plays and we didn't. That's what it's all about trying to get off the field."
How much did Omar's leaving affect you? "Me, not much, its tough when anyone gets hurt, especially a leader like Omar. But there is nothing we can do about that."
What do you think about the rest of the season?
"There are four games left, that's it. I have four games left as a Falcon. I don't want to go out, the seniors or me on a bad note. We don't want to be remembered for this game."
Anthony Turner
What did Omar say to you?
"He told me it's just like practice, which it was. There are some things that I needed to execute and I didn't."
Rate your overall performance
"I can't rate it till I watch the film. Every week you have to prepare yourself as if you were a starter, and I didn't do that this week. There are something's that I need to work on to become someone like Omar."
Was the speed different?
"The tempo of the game changes form practice to game time, and that's just something I am going to have to get ready for."
In the progression of looking at your receivers, were they taking away Sanders and Sharon?
"Yes, they shifted their coverage over to Sharon and Sanders, which made it hard to see them. I have to get better at that though, and look at all the receivers."
Charles Sharon
How did the game change for you when Turner went in?
"Not much, I knew I still had to try to get open, they just shifted the defense more on me but I needed to overcome that."
WMU Head Coach Billy Cubit
"I keep a sheet every week with all the little things. A guy not wearing his shoes, guy not doing the right thing, guy not having his shirt, and on my sheet I had only one little thing all week. I told the guys, when you do the right things, good things happen."
Commenting on WR Greg Jennings
"At times I think to myself if I am getting him involved enough, then I look up the halftime sheet and he has seven catches for 155 yards. I tell our quarterbacks to just throw it up there and Greg will go up and get it."
Commenting on the WMU win, with the Omar Jacobs injury...
"Omar is a great player, but we lost out quarterback, so I know how they feel. All I know if he didn't play defense and we put 45 points on the board. I feel bad about the kid, because he is a great person."
What was the key play of the game? "The sack, fumble was the key. We are talking about a team here that lost 52-0 last year and they called off the dogs last season. It could have been 100-0. We get that sack, fumble for a touchdown, the kids are looking around saying we are going to be okay."
