CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The members of the Mid-American Conference News Media Association have made their selections, and the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has been picked to win the MAC's East Division and repeat as MAC Tournament champions in 2006. The league's 12 head coaches, along with the student-athletes chosen to the preseason all-conference team, gathered at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Cleveland Wednesday (Oct. 26) for the MAC's annual preseason media gathering.
The Falcons received 132 points and 17 of the 23 first-place votes in the poll, released by the MACNMA, to finish 15 points ahead of Kent State. Eastern Michigan, the preseason choice in the West Division, also received 132 votes and garnered 20 first-place votes.
A total of 13 voters chose the Falcons to win the MAC Tournament, with KSU (five), EMU (four) and Western Michigan (one) also receiving votes.
The Falcons return to the East Division in 2005-06 after spending three seasons as a member of the West. Last year, BGSU was picked to finish third in the West, but won the division title to earn the number-one seed for the league tournament. BGSU won three consecutive games at Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) in Cleveland to capture the MAC Tournament crown and advance to the NCAA Championships.
Falcon head coach Curt Miller and juniors Liz Honegger and Ali Mann represented the team in Cleveland on Wednesday, meeting with various members of the media to discuss the upcoming season. Miller has nine letterwinners, including all five starters, back from last year's team.
Mann and Honegger were in Cleveland after being selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team. Mann was also chosen to the team last October. Both players earned All-MAC Second-Team honors for their play in 2004-05.
Fans get their first chance to see the Falcons in action on Friday, Nov. 18, when BGSU hosts IPFW to open the regular season.
The MAC News Media Association Preseason Poll follows, with first-place votes and points received.
