CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University senior Samantha Meister has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning (Oct. 31). Meister earns the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her Falcon career.
Meister becomes only the fourth player in BG history to earn league P-O-W honors more than once. Kristy Coppes was a three-time player-of-the-week honoree, while Jill Conover and Lindsay Carter each earned two such honors. Carter was last week's recipient of the league P-O-W award.
Meister, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Northwest HS), scored two goals, including what proved to be the match winner, in Friday's (Oct. 28) 3-2 win at Toledo. With the victory, BGSU clinched the outright MAC regular-season championship and earned the number-one seed for the MAC Tournament.
Meister's multiple-goal match was her first of the season and the second of her career. She had four goals in a 4-3 overtime win at Northern Illinois during her sophomore year, a performance that resulted in her other MAC P-O-W award.
On Friday, Meister's first goal of the day broke a scoreless tie with 12 minutes left in the opening half. Then, she headed home a Julie Trundle corner kick to put BG up by a 3-1 margin early in the second period.
On the season, Meister has eight goals and 22 points to lead the team in each category. In her career, she ranks second in school history in both goals (28) and points (73).
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards, 13-6-0 overall, finished MAC play with a 9-2-0 league ledger. BGSU will host a MAC Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday (Nov. 1), facing UT for the second time in five days. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
