The Brown and Orange split the season series with the Golden Flashes, each squad winning at home. The middle hitters were big in both matches, leading the team in kills, hitting percentage and blocks. Sophomore Stephanie Swiger and redshirt freshman Kendra Halm are both hitting above .400 against Kent State this season.
BGSU has also done a nice job of limiting the Flashes' top offensive weapon, Danielle Holt. The Falcons have stymied Holt to a lowly .141 hitting percentage, nearly .60 less than her season average.
If the Falcons defeat Kent State, they will advance to the quarterfinals and square-off against second-seeded Eastern Michigan on Friday in the SeaGate Centre, located in Toledo, Ohio. The quarterfinal match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Manser Honored By ESPN
Senior Emily Manser was been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division Volleyball Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced. She earned second-team honors. Manser carries a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in Communication Disorders at BGSU.
Manser ranks second on the team with 23 service aces and 378 digs (3.74/game) this season. She has also compiled 228 kills and 35 blocks for the 17-13 Falcons.
After being named to the first-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in 2004, Manser becomes just the third Falcon volleyball player to be given the award twice in their careers.
Meek Reaches Top Five
Freshman Chelsey Meek is putting together one of the best defensive seasons in Falcon history. With 18 digs against #20 Ohio on Nov. 12, Meek surpassed Angellette Love's 424 (1992) digs in one season, slotting her fifth best in Bowling Green history. Teammate Chrissy Gothke currently holds the record for most digs in a season with 497, which she accomplished as a freshman in 2003.
Meek's 4.11 digs per game is tied with Gothke's 2003 season as the second best season average in school history.
Third Falcon Receives MAC Honors
Junior Chrissy Gothke was named MAC East Player of the Week for Nov. 6-13. Gothke showed her unique versatility, playing both setter and outside hitter while leading Bowling Green to a 2-1 record and a first-round home match in the 2005 MAC Volleyball Tournament. During the stretch, Gothke averaged 3.12 kills, 1.14 blocks, 12.57 assists and 5.00 digs per game.
Gothke hit .500 with 10 kills and four service aces in a sweep of non-conference opponent Oakland University on Nov. 8, also accounting for 14.5 points in the win over the Golden Grizzlies.
Against Kent State, Gothke stepped it up defensively, tallying six blocks and 10 digs in the sweep of the Golden Flashes. Gothke also tallied 43 assists in the effort.
Gothke fell just one dig shy of her eighth triple double of the season against #20 Ohio with 10 kills, 23 assists and nine digs.
