BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The BGSU Falcon Volleyball team finished the season with an 18-14 record after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the MAC tournament. The Falcons fell to the second-seeded Eagles of Eastern Michigan (30-27, 30-22, 30-24).
Despite out hitting Eastern Michigan in the opener, Bowling Green could not hold onto several leads. Freshman Meghan Mohr was a beast in game one, hitting .833 with five kills. Junior Chrissy Gothke was also impressive in the early going, contributing three kills, eight assists and four digs. The Falcons looked prime to take game one with a 22-18 lead before a 4-0 run by Eastern Michigan tied the game at 22-22. Bowling Green regained the lead with a 26-24 advantage, however this time the Eagles went on a five-point run to take a 29-26 advantage. After an Emily Manser service ace, Melissa Bartlett gave EMU the win with a kill.
Bowling Green had no answer for the Eagles in game two, allowing a .462 hitting percentage. Senior Ashlei Nofzinger, who recorded her 300th kill of the season, provided an offensive spark with four kills, but the Falcons could only muster seven digs in the 30-22 defeat.
Game three was back and forth with the lead changing several times. Bowling Green's latest lead came at 15-14 after a kill by sophomore Madeline Means. Once again the Eagles put together a large run, this time a six-point run to take a big lead. Means racked up seven kills in game three including two big ones down the stretch. Unfortunately, a few timely kills by Eastern Michigan ended the match 30-24.
This marks the second season in a row that Bowling Green has been able to advance to the quarterfinals after earning the right to host a first round match. With just three upperclassmen, this young Falcon squad looks to be at the top next season in the Mid-American Conference.
