WALTHAM, Mass. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University fifth-year senior Ali Shingler has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team. Shingler, a First-Team selection, becomes the first student-athlete in the history of the program to earn such an honor.
A native of Grove City, Ohio (Grove City H.S.), Shingler was a three-year starter at goalkeeper for the Falcons, helping BGSU to back-to-back Mid-American Conference Tournament titles in 2004 and 2005. She also helped the Brown and Orange to the MAC's regular-season crown in the '05 campaign.
Earlier in November, Shingler was named to the academic all-district team for the third consecutive year. Shingler maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average, with a dual major of biology and applied health science.
Shingler started all 23 games this season to date, and set a school record with 14 wins. Shingler had a goals-against average of just 1.32 and tied the school record with seven shutouts. Earlier this season, she put together a school-record shutout streak of 432:19, anchoring a defense that posted four consecutive shutouts during the middle of the Mid-American Conference schedule.
Shingler was named to the MAC's All-Tournament team as the Falcon defense posted three shutouts to win the league tourney. She had a total of 12 saves in those three matches, and had three more stops of opponent penalty kicks, as two of the Falcons' three contests ended in scoreless overtime ties and required PKs.
Shingler ranks first or second on every goalkeeping list in BG history.
Shingler was a part of the Falcons' nine-member senior class, the first class in school history to qualify for the MAC Tournament in four consecutive seasons.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of American, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II and III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards finished 14-7-2 overall and won the MAC's regular-season title with a 9-2-0 league ledger. BGSU advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season.
