Mobile, Alabama - The following are post game notes following the Falcons' 71-60 loss to Florida State in the Coors Classic in Mobile, Alabama.
The Seminoles captured the initial meeting between the two teams. They improved to 5-4 all-time against the MAC.
This was BGSU's second appearance in four years at the Coors Classic. They lost to Alabama, 72-63, in 2002 in their first trip to this event.
BGSU is 1-1 against the ACC this season. BGSU defeated Virginia Tech, 72-71 on November 12 in Blacksburg.
Numbers Game
The Seminoles opened the game with a 12-0 run. The Falcons did not score until junior Martin Samarco hit a jumper with 12:51 remaining.
The Falcons battled back and tied the score at 21-21 with 6:51 left in the first half. BGSU took its only lead of the first half at 26-25 on another Samarco triple with 2:20 left before intermission.
The Seminoles led 30-28 at halftime. FSU scored the first four points of the second half, but the Falcons managed to regain the lead, 35-34 on a Samarco trey with 16:52 left in the game.
The Falcons took their biggest lead of the game at 43-40 with 14:05 to go after junior Matt Lefeld hit a layup.
After FSU built a five-point advantage (51-46), senior Steven Wright hit a trey with 9:27 to go. That two-point deficit was the closest the Falcons would come to regaining the lead the rest of the game.
The Falcons had a season-low 13 turnovers.
Their 12 three-pointers was a season-high as was their 31 attempts from long distance.
This was the sixth time this season that a Falcon opponent shot 30 or more free throws. BGSU tied its season low with eight free throws made (vs. Western Carolina). The Falcons' 16 free throw attempts also tied a season low.
The Falcons held the Seminoles to a season-low 14.3 percent from long distance (2/14).
Player Notes
Junior Martin Samarco was named Game MVP by the local media after scoring a team-high 27 points. He had 19 points in the first half and made a season-high seven three-pointers. He also had 27 points in his last game against Bradley. He also played 40 minutes for the third straight game he has played in.
Senior Steven Wright had his first double-figure game of the season with 12 points. He set a new career-high with four three-pointers made. He also added four rebounds and four assists.
Junior Matt Lefeld had 10 second half points and has scored in double digits in consecutive games for the first time in his career.
Freshman Erik Marschall had eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Junior John Floyd did not score, but had six assists for the second straight game.
Freshman Brian Moten saw his first action as a Falcon. He became eligible at midnight and had one practice with the Falcons prior to the game with the Seminoles. He hit one three-pointer in three minutes of action.
Freshman Nick Wilson has voluntarily left the program. He requested and has been granted a release from his scholarship.
