NEW YORK, N.Y. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The awards keep rolling in for the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, as three members of the program have been honored by online magazine Soccer Buzz. Senior Samantha Meister was named to the All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, while Corbie Yee was chosen to the region's All-Freshman Team. Head coach Andy Richards was the runner-up for Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year.
Meister, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Northwest H.S.) was named to the Soccer Buzz team less than a week after earning second-team honors on the NSCAA/adidas all-region team. A midfielder, she capped her career by leading the Falcons with eight goals and 22 points in 2005, en route to earning Mid-American Conference Player-of-the-Year honors. She was BG's first-ever league POY pick, and also was named to the All-MAC First Team, becoming the first Falcon ever to earn all-league first-team laurels twice. She finished her four-year tenure with totals of 28 goals and 73 points, ranking second on the BGSU career lists in each category.
Yee, a native of Berea, Ohio (Berea H.S.), was named the MAC Freshman of the Year. She played in 22 matches on the season, starting 13, including each of the last 11. She ranked fourth on the team with 15 points, including a total of six goals to finish second on the Falcons. Yee's point total included a goal and an assist in the MAC Tournament's semifinal round, a 2-0 win over Miami. Yee's point total was the highest by a Falcon freshman since the 2002 season.
Richards has an overall record of 61-59-12 through six years, including a MAC Tournament mark of 8-3-3. He has now guided the Brown and Orange to the semifinal round of the league tournament on five occasions (including each of the last four seasons), to the championship match four times and to the NCAA Championships in each of the last two years. In 2004, Richards guided the Falcons to the first MAC Tournament title and NCAA berth in school history. Richards and the team followed that performance by winning both the MAC's regular-season and tournament crowns in 2005, advancing to the NCAA Championships once again.
Richards was runner-up to Marquette's Markus Roeders in the All-Great Lakes Region Coach-of-the-Year balloting. There are 55 schools in the Great Lakes Region.
Notre Dame's Katie Thorlakson was named the region's Player of the Year, while her teammate, Kerri Hanks, garnered region Freshman-of-the-Year honors.
Richards and the Falcons finished 14-7-2 overall and won the MAC's regular-season title with a 9-2-0 league ledger. As mentioned, BGSU won the MAC Tournament crown and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season. Richards (MAC Coach of the Year), Meister (Player of the Year) and Yee (Freshman of the Year) swept the MAC's specialty awards for the 2005 season.
