PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - A few thoughts from Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Curt Miller after the Falcons' 62-45 win over Iona College in the consolation game of the Hawk Classic ...
"I was proud of the kids that, after halftime, they came out with more focus and with a purpose. What has been a calling card for this program for the last couple of years is our competitiveness. Certainly, we didn't have the best offensive tournament, but the kids knew that we could play better in the second half than we did in the first half. We had to be more determined, take what the defense gave us and have a more well-rounded and balanced offensive attack. We were able to do that and, at times, looked like the BG team of early in the year. Scoring 45 points in a half, after a 44-point game (vs. Delaware) and a 17-point first half ... I was very happy with the second-half performance."
(On the play of Liz Honegger, who scored 12 of BG's 17 first-half points)
"Liz singlehandedly kept us in the game in the first half. When you play that poorly, we talked about how fortunate we were to be down only six points. Certainly, we played poorly enough to be down a lot of points, but Liz kept us within striking distance in the first half. She had a great tournament, and I'm very proud of her play. She certainly deserved to be on the all-tournament team."
(On the play of the BG defense in the two games)
"We had a very good defensive weekend. We are working hard at the defensive end, and know that every possession means something. It was a very good performance at the defensive end, and I think that bodes well for the future. Not only are we hanging our hat on our high ball-screen offense, but this year we are able to hang our hat on a good defense. Our points-per-game allowed average is the best it's been in our tenure here, and we're very pleased with that."
"We let a halftime lead slip away in the opening round for the first time in a regular-season game in a long time. So, it was very important that -- once we got the lead and the momentum in the game again -- we closed out a game again. We pride ourselves in being closers, and when we get leads, we feel confident that we can put teams away. I was glad to see that we had that killer instinct back in the second half against Iona today."
