"Senior Night" for Falcons This Friday Night vs. #4 Michigan (March 4)
It will be "Senior Night" for the BGSU Hockey team this Friday, March 4, when #4-ranked Michigan comes to town for a 7:05 p.m. contest. That same night, former Falcon Hobey Baker Award winners George McPhee and Brian Holzinger will be in the Ice Arena for a special ring presentation by a Hobey Baker Memorial Committee and Jostens representative during the first intermission.
Six Seniors to be Recognized Prior to Face-Off on Friday
The six senior members of the 2004-05 Falcon Hockey team will be recognized prior to Friday's contest against #4 Michigan. Included in that group is forward Steve Brudzewski (Dearborn, Mich.), defenseman Taylor Christie (Toronto, Ont.), forward and tri-captain Ryan Minnabarriet (Ashcroft, B.C.), defenseman Chris Pedota (Westbury, N.Y.), forward and tri-captain Alex Rogosheske (Mahtomedi, Minn.), and goalie and tri-captain Jordan Sigalet (Surrey, B.C.).
McPhee and Holzinger to be Presented Hobey Baker Memorial Rings on March 4
Former Falcons George McPhee and Brian Holzinger will be presented with Hobey Baker Memorial Rings during the first intermission of this Friday's game against #4 Michigan. McPhee and Holzinger are two of just 25 winners of the award given annually since 1981 to the top collegiate hockey player. McPhee won the award in 1982 while Holzinger captured the award in 1995. An autograph session with McPhee and Holzinger will be held in the South End of the BGSU Ice Arena from 6-7 p.m.
McPhee is in his sixth season serving as vice president and general manager of the Washington Capitals. Prior to joining the Capitals, McPhee served five seasons as the vice president and director of hockey operations as well as alternate governor for the Vancouver Canucks. Holzinger has played 10 seasons in the National Hockey League, most recently with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets in 2003-04. BGSU is one of just seven schools to have multiple winners of this prestigious award.
Falcons vs. Wolverines
UM leads the overall series, 65-30-3. BGSU is 14-38-0 at Yost Ice Arena and 16-23-3 at home vs. the Wolverines. UM has won the last six meetings by the combined score of 32-16 and are 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings. The last win for BGSU over Michigan was Jan. 25, 2002, by the score of 4-2 at Yost.
Falcons Clinch Home Ice for CCHA Playoffs
BGSU clinched home ice for the CCHA Playoffs with the Feb. 25, 2-1 victory over Michigan State. The home playoff series for the Falcons will be the first in a decade, dating back to March 10-11, 1995, when they swept Notre Dame (7-2 and 5-4). BGSU did not make the playoffs in the 1997-98 season.
BGSU's Best Season in Nearly a Decade!
BGSU has clinched an overall regular-season and CCHA regular-season winning record for the first time since the 1995-96 season (26-14-1 overall, 18-11-1 CCHA, 2nd place). BGSU's 16 wins are the most since the 2000-01 season (16-19-5) and the 13 league victories are the most since the 1998-99 season (13-14-3). A fifth-place finish for the Falcons would be the best since tying for fifth in the 1996-97 season. A fourth-place finish in the CCHA would be the best since 1994-95.
