LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior Lindsay Heimrich threw her second consecutive three-hitter, and classmate Gina Rango had two extra-base hits and drove in two runs, as the Bowling Green State University softball team downed New Mexico State, 6-1, Saturday night (March 12). The game was part of the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-12 on the season, while the Aggies fall to 11-14 on the year.
Heimrich, who threw a three-hit shutout in Friday's (March 11) 2-0 win over Minnesota, again allowed only three hits on Saturday. The junior surrendered one run, walking two batters and striking out three to up her record to 2-4 on the year.
At the plate, the Falcons pounded out nine hits, including seven from the top-three spots in the lineup. Sophomore Jeanine Baca had three hits and scored a pair of runs, while classmate Megan McPherson had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Rango had a run scored, in addition to her hit and RBI totals in the win.
Senior Kristen Anderson and freshman Emily Gouge also had hits for the Brown and Orange.
BG got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Baca and McPherson had back-to-back singles with one out, and both runners came around to score when Rango tripled to centerfield off NMSU starter Stephanie Carrasco. Freshman Allison Vallas was hit by a pitch, and promptly teamed with Rango for a double steal. Rango's steal of home gave the Brown and Orange a three-run lead.
Then, Heimrich was hit by a pitch, signalling the end of Carrasco's day. Anderson greeted reliever Lindsay Ashley with a single to plate Vallas. Andeson stole second and freshman D.J. DeLong drew a walk, but Ashley got a force out and a strikeout to end the inning.
BG added to the lead in the fourth frame. Baca tripled to left, and McPherson followed with a double. McPherson would steal third before scoring on a one-out wild pitch.
The Aggies' only run game in the sixth, on an infield single, a stolen base and a grounder to the right side.
Carrasco took the loss for the Aggies, allowing four runs and five hits in two-plus innings. Ashley walked three batters, giving up four hits and two runs.
Following the New Mexico State win, the Falcons' reward was a game with #1 Arizona.
