CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Bowling Green State University softball team split a pair of games in opening-day action at the Hoo's Who Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. The Falcons downed arch-rival Toledo, 7-1, before losing to host Virginia by a 5-1 final. BG is now 1-1 in the tourney and 5-14 on the season.
In the opening game, junior Liz Vrabel struck out 10 batters, and the Falcons scored in five consecutive innings for a six-run victory over UT.
The Brown and Orange began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Lindsay Heimrich drew a leadoff walk, and freshman Allison Vallas moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Heimrich took third base on a grounder, then scored on a single by freshman D.J. DeLong.
In the third, BGSU added three more runs. Sophomore Megan McPherson had a one-out single, and junior Gina Rango reached base on a UT throwing error, advancing McPherson to second. The two teamed up on a double steal before senior Kristen Anderson's double scored both runners. One out later, Vallas singled up the middle to score Anderson.
Toledo scored in the fourth on a leadoff homer by pitcher Kim Pettitt, but BG got that run back in the bottom of the inning. DeLong led off with a triple and scored on a bunt by sophomore Jeanine Baca. The next inning, Vallas doubled down the left-field line with two outs, and sophomore Ashley Zirkle singled to bring her home.
BGSU completed the game's scoring with an unearned run in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Brecken Libbe led off with a single, took second on a Baca grounder and scored on a Rocket error.
The seven runs were easily enough for Vrabel, who allowed one run and scattered seven hits in her complete-game victory. Pettitt took the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) in four innings. Kaitlyn Lloyd gave up two runs (one earned) in two innings of relief work.
At the plate, eight different Falcons had at least one hit, with Vallas and DeLong getting two each. Vallas was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI, while DeLong also had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run.
Erica Singer had a 3-for-3 game for the Rockets.
In the second game, Virginia used a 12-hit attack and a four-run fifth inning to post a 5-1 win over the Falcons. BGSU, the home team for this game, got on the board first with a third-inning run. Sophomores Baca and Emmy Ramsey each singled with two outs. On Ramsey's hit, Baca took an extra base on a Cavalier error, putting runners at the corners. Rango then came through with a single up the middle, giving BG the lead.
In the circle, Heimrich blanked the Cavaliers for four innings, but the hosts plated four runs in the top of the fifth. Three consecutive singles, including an RBI base hit by Elea Crockett, tied the score. A fielder's choice grounder scored another run, and Kierstie Cameron's two-run single capped the inning's scoring.
The Falcons threatened against Whitney Holstun in the bottom of the inning, but could not score. Vrabel reached on a leadoff single, but was erased on a grounder by Angie Ortiz. Baca followed with a double, but Ortiz was out at the plate on the play. Ramsey singled to move Baca to third, but Holstun got an inning-ending grounder.
UVa closed the scoring on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Amy McKean.
Holstun picked up the win for the Cavaliers, allowing one run on eight hits. She struck out four batters without issuing a walk in her complete-game effort.
Heimrich allowed four runs on 10 hits in four-and-a-third innings, striking out three without walking a batter. Vrabel got the final eight outs, allowing one run on two hits. She walked two and fanned four.
Virginia outhit BG, 12-8, with Crockett getting three hits and Cameron and Jenn Wynn two each for the Cavaliers. Baca went 3-for-4 with a double and BGSU's lone run scored, while Ramsey was 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Falcons return to the diamond for two Saturday games at the Hoo's Who. BGSU will take on East Carolina and Rutgers.
