CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University baseball standout Burke Badenhop has been named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week by the league's faculty athletics representatives.
Akron's Jennie Castle was the female winner of the award this week.
Badenhop (pitcher, Sr., 3.94, economics, Perrysburg, Ohio) threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout as the Falcons beat visiting Buffalo, 1-0, on Sunday. Badenhop struck out a season-high nine batters, one off his career best, in his first-ever complete game. The win improved his record to 6-1 on the season, setting a personal best for victories and giving him the most wins by a Falcon since 2002. Badenhop also pitched two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 7-1 win over Buffalo, allowing no runs. He has moved into a tie for sixth place in school history with 65 career appearances, and is now tied for eighth place on BGSU's career wins list, with 14.
Castle (middle-distance, Sr., 3.763, mass media communications-news, Barnesville, Ohio) put together a season-best meet at the Duke Invitational last Friday and Saturday. She opened up with a victory in section 2 of the 1,500 meters in a regional qualifying time of 4:23.26. In the race she defeated Nicole Edwards of Michigan, who was part of the Wolverine's distance-medley relay team that won the title at the NCAA indoor meet. Castle closed out the weekend by winning the 800 meters with a regional-qualifying and season-best time of 2:06.91. Both times are conference-bests this season and rank in the top-five nationally.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Bowling Green: Liz Vrabel (softball, pitcher, Jr., 3.21, international business, Allison Park, Pa.) was 1-1 with an earned-run average of just 0.50 last week. She allowed only six hits in 14 innings of work, as opponents batted just .130 against her. Vrabel's win was a four-hit shutout at Ball State Saturday, in a 2-0 BGSU victory. She faced just three batters over the minimum in that game, with 70 strikes among her 99 pitches and did not walk a batter while striking out six. In her loss, Vrabel threw a complete-game two-hitter as Miami beat the Falcons, 1-0. The RedHawks' lone run came without a ball being hit out of the infield. After allowing a single to begin the game, Vrabel retired 18 consecutive hitters. She got four infield ground balls in the seventh inning, but MU got a run. On the season, Vrabel is now 9-9 with a 2.34 ERA and is 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA in MAC play.
Buffalo: Miglena Nenova (tennis, No. 2 singles/No. 2 doubles, So., 3.238, business, Rousse, Bulgaria) won both her second singles matches over the weekend in super-tiebreakers. She defeated NIU's Ivonne Andrade, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to lead UB past the Huskies, 5-2. Nenova trailed Andrade in the second set before winning four of the final five games to force the super-tiebreaker. She knocked off WMU's Malena Remynse, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) for UB's lone win against the Broncos. She is 11-8 overall and 4-2 in the MAC in singles play.
Central Michigan: Jill DeRoche (softball, pitcher, So., 3.09, physical education, Brighton, Mich.) went 2-1 with a save and a 4.06 ERA last week. She notched a relief victory against No. 1 ranked Michigan, tossed a one-hit shutout against MAC-foe Toledo, and earned a save in the series finale against the Rockets. DeRoche's only loss on the week came in a start against the No. 1-ranked Wolverines. Take out her start against No. 1 Michigan when she gave up six runs in 1 2/3 innings and DeRoche didn't allow a run in her other 8 2/3 innings. She struck out 10 on the week and walked just two in 10.1 total innings. Her shutout against Toledo was her first this season. In the series finale against Toledo with CMU leading 5-3, the bases were loaded with Rocket cleanup hitter Kim Pettitt at the plate. DeRoche came in and got Pettitt to strikeout to end the game as DeRoche picked up a save.
Eastern Michigan: Victoria Domina (tennis, Sr., 3.26, international business, Olavarria, Argentina) won two singles matches and two doubles matches this weekend in leading EMU to road victories over both Bowling Green and Ball State. Playing at No. 1 singles, Domina beat the top Bowling Green player in three sets, winning the last set 6-1. Against Ball State, Domina dominated her opponents at the top flight in a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. In addition, Domina was also part of two victories at the No. 1 doubles position. Domina was able to help EMU to 6-1 team scores in both matches, as the doubles point and wins for the top player set the tone in both matches.
Ohio: Jenny Tisevich (softball, Sr., 3.19, pre-exercise physiology, Canton, Ohio) carried the Ohio softball team to a 4-3 mark on the week, including its first conference victory and series win versus Kent State. Howard clocked 14:31.95 to take sixth place in section three of the event. He bests the previous mark of current UA assistant coach Rick Williamson, a clocking of 14:35.98 set in April of 1997. Howard's time is the fastest in the Mid-American Conference this year by nearly 30 seconds.
Buffalo: Adam Ruskowski (baseball, RHP, So., 3.19, undecided, Utica, N.Y.) tied a program-record since reinstatement in 2000 with his fourth win of the year on Saturday at Bowling Green. Ruszkowski is 4-1 with a 5.67 ERA in a team-high 39.2 innings. He has 18 strikeouts and only 10 walks. He was also a part of the combined one-hitter of Canisius on Wednesday, pitching the first three innings and allowing only a first-inning hit.
Eastern Michigan: Korey Mahoney (golf, Jr., 3.42, economics, East Lansing, Mich.) finished second in the individual competition, shooting a seven-under-par 206 (71-65-70), the lowest three-round total in Eastern Michigan University history. Mahoney accomplished this feat at the 36th Annual Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va., April 8-9. EMU placed eighth in the 16-team event. Korey finished second in a field of over 80 golfers from host Marshall, Louisville, Ohio State, and MAC rivals Bowling Green, Miami, Ohio, Akron, Northern Illinois and Ball State.
