Fort Wayne, Ind. - Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne overcame a 12-5 deficit with 10 runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat visiting Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon, 15-14. The loss overshadowed several outstanding individual performances by the Falcons.
Senior Andy Hudak smacked a career-high three home runs to go along with three base-on-balls while sophomores Eric Lawson and Josh Stewart each had two doubles and a home run.
IPFW (18-13) struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to lead-off hitter John Keena getting hit by a pitch thrown from starter Kyle Knoblauch. After Keena stole second base, Jim Fremion was hit by a pitch and Eric Steinbach singled to left field, scoring Keena.
BGSU responded in the second inning with a two-run blast by Jimmy Lipari, his second homer of the year, to go up 2-1. IPFW answered, though, with two unearned runs thanks to three hits and two Falcon errors. BGSU ended the day with five errors, including four by Lipari at shortstop.
Hudak knotted the game, 3-3, with his first of three home runs in the third inning, a solo blast to right field. The Mastadons then scored a pair in the fifth inning, one unearned, to go back up 5-3. That's when BGSU broke out the bats.
The Falcons scored two runs in the fifth inning, five in the sixth inning, and two more in the seventh inning to stake a 12-5 advantage. BGSU pounded out 10 hits in those three innings, alone, including two-run homers by Stewart in the fifth inning, Lawson and Hudak in the sixth inning, and again by Hudak in the seventh frame.
However, IPFW did not lay down. The home team plated four runs in the seventh inning on three hits, two walks, two wild pitches and one Falcon error to make it a 12-9 BGSU lead. Then six runs in the eighth inning made it a 15-12 contest for IPFW, thanks to four hits, two walks, two wild pitches, and a hit batsman.
BGSU tried to come back in the top of the ninth with two runs. Lawson hit a one-out double then came home on a double by Stewart for the first run. Then with two outs and the bases loaded, an error by the IPFW third baseman scored Hudak from third base. But, Jeff Warnock struck out with the bases loaded and the tying run on third base to end the game, 15-14.
Sophomore Greg Becker (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs over the final inning on three hits and two walks. Knoblauch lasted five innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on one walk and two strikeouts. Justin Hollander (1-1) got the win for IPFW while John Gibson picked up the save.
BGSU ended with a 16-13 advantage in hits while stranding 11 runners to IPFW's six. The six home runs hit by BGSU was one off the school record of seven, accomplished three times.
