Bowling Green, Ohio - A two-run, ninth inning rally led Bowling Green to a 4-3 victory over visiting Wright State on Wednesday afternoon. Eric Lawson singled home Kevin Longstreth from second base for the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Wright State closer Joe Smith entered the game in the ninth inning having allowed just one earned run in 22.1 innings of work this season (0.38 ERA). However, Tyler Wasserman led off with a hit that dropped for a single to left field. Jimmy Lipari hit into a fielder's choice, which retired Wasserman at second base, for the first out. Lipari advanced to second base on a wild pitch before Longstreth laced a single to left field. The hit scored Lipari to knot the game, 3-3, and Longstreth moved to second base on the throw to the plate. Lawson followed with the game-winning hit.
BGSU struck first in the first inning when Jeff Warnock hit a one-out double and came home on a single by Nolan Reimold.
WSU answered with a run in the top of the second inning and plated another in the sixth inning for a 2-1 lead. BGSU then scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when Josh Stewart reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, moved to second on a sacrifice by Jay Threet, and scored on a Lipari single.
The Raiders regained the lead with a run in the top of the seventh before BGSU's heroics in the bottom of the ninth gave the Falcons their 15th home victory of the season (15-3).
BGSU used seven different pitchers in the midweek affair with senior Matt Hundley (6-1) picking up the victory. He pitched a hitless ninth inning with a walk and a strikeout in his 23rd appearance of the season. WSU's Smith (0-2) picked up the loss.
Warnock was the only Falcon with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with a double and sacrifice hit. The senior now has a career-high 13 sacrifice hits for the season, four off the school record set by Mike Lanseer in 1977.
BGSU improves to 28-14 overall while Wright State drops to 19-26 on the season. The Falcons host their final home series of the 2005 season this weekend, May 13-15, when Toledo visits Warren Steller Field. Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m. while Saturday's and Sunday's games are set for 1 p.m. starts.
Prior to Saturday's game the 1995 BGSU team that captured the MAC Regular-Season championship will be recognized, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the team that recorded a school-record 22 league victories. Before Sunday's game, the Falcon class of 2005 will be honored.
