BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Three Bowling Green State University student-athletes have been named recipients of the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award. The award is given out by Black Issues In Higher Education magazine, which established the award in 1995 to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination.
The Falcons who have been honored with this award for 2005 are gymnast Sakura Tomita (Tucson, Arizona), long jumper Sharonda Alexander (Detroit, Michigan) and sprinter/hurdler Nicole Standback (Battle Creek, Michigan). Tomita is one of just five gymnasts in the nation to earn this award while Alexander and Standback were both named to the women's track and field third-team.
BGSU is one of just two Mid-American Conference schools to have a student-athlete earn this award with the other being Eastern Michigan. BGSU is the only Division I university in Ohio to have three female student-athletes earn the award.
Michigan State men's basketball student-athlete Chris Hill was named the Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar-Athlete of the Year while UNC-Charlotte track and field student-athlete Sharonda Latrice Johnson won the Arthur Ashe Jr. Female Sports Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
