Ann Arbor, Mich. - Bowling Green rallied from a 4-0 deficit to Michigan but could not plate the game-tying run, dropping a 4-3 contest in Ann Arbor on Tuesday afternoon. The game was added to the schedule for both teams Sunday night.
UM scored three runs in the third inning and one in the fifth inning to stake a 4-0 lead. Jeff Kunkel had an RBI-single, Kyle Bohm scored on a wild pitch, and Kunkel scored on an A.J. Scheidt groundout in the third inning off BGSU starter Kyle Knoblauch (0-4). Kunkel added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for the 4-0 lead.
However, that advantage was cut in half with one swing of the bat by BGSU's Nolan Reimold in the seventh inning. Senior Andy Hudak led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. Reimold followed with a no-doubt shot beyond the left-field wall, his MAC leading 19th home run of the season. Kelly Hunt holds the BGSU record for home runs in a season with 22 in 2002.
Two outs later in the inning, Tyler Wasserman doubled to right-center field, Jimmy Lipari walked and Josh Dietz walked, loading the bases. But, Eric Lawson pulled a laser of a shot that found a leaping third baseman A.J. Scheidt's glove, ending the rally.
Sophomore lefthander Adam Gump entered in relief of Knoblauch in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving up just one hit with one walk and one strikeout over the final two innings.
BGSU pulled itself to within one run in the eighth inning thanks to a two-out single by pinch-hitter Kurt Wells. His line drive went off UM pitcher Ali Hussain's leg, allowing Hudak to score from third base and move Reimold to third base. Kevin Longstreth, though, struck out looking for the third out of the inning.
The Falcons had another opportunity in the top of the ninth inning. Lawson received a two-out walk via reliever Alex Martin. But UM's sixth different pitcher, Derek Feldkamp, entered and got Josh Stewart to strike out looking for the final out of the game.
UM held a 9-6 advantage in hits while BGSU stranded eight and the Wolverines left six runners. Reimold was the only Falcon with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3.
UM improves to 36-14 overall while BGSU drops to 31-15 overall. The Falcons play a non-conference game at Toledo on Wednesday, May 18, at 3 p.m. before the final Mid-American Conference series of the year at Western Michigan this weekend (May 20-22).
